That's totally awesome!!!! Wish I had a set up like that.. I was just thinking about getting a handheld one for emergencies... Do you know if they work OK or not?
Quoting: 4thhorseman That is thousands of $$$ in gear - I am lucky my dad is a ham as well :) I have several handhelds (or "HTs" as they are referred to (handheld transceivers)) ( [ link to imgur.com] ) they work fine if you don't have high expectations for working out too far without good antennas on both ends. I have made simplex (radio to radio, no repeater) contacts with both ends being 5W handheld (HTs) to 52miles - that is because the other station was at ~5800ft above sealevel, doing what is called "SOTA", basically hiking to peaks and then operating from them. The reason I got that contact with my handheld is because of his height - his signal covered a good bit of the Puget Sound, as he was on the east olympics. At handheld (VHF\UHF) frequencies, the closer to line of sight between you and the other station, the better the reception strength will be. You can usually expect anywhere from 1-25mi coverage with a 5w HT depending on terrain inbetween. Quoting: kundalinichi thanks.. That info helped.. actually what I was looking for in a handheld and what you said works out perfect.. Now I'm going to have to call you a radiotard...lol Quoting: 4thhorseman I'll take it, happily. Hahah :) If you do begin your research and find that baofengs are what you want (cheap chinese radios, but hey they work, and the cheap pays off if you buy 2-4 to outfit family or whatever).. then look at upgrading the stock antenna. The stock antennas of most HTs are basically useless. Or just buy an all encompassing package ( [ link to www.radioddity.com] ) that literally is all you need, and as far as HTs go, quite a good price. Now I must plug becoming a ham, because why not. It costs $15 from most all testing places, the test is a simple 35 question, 4-choice. Use [ link to hamstudy.org (secure)] flash cards to study(entry level license is the "technician" exam) and [ link to www.arrl.org] to find an exam site. Goodluck either ways and goodnight :) Quoting: kundalinichi Ok Kunda, So, when I get stuff I do not go cheap.. I will usually go all out and get the best. I have learned that most times it never pays in the long run to buy the cheaper product but, it does pay to get the best. So, what brand would you say is best for a handheld? Not to worried about the license thing.. that just kind of makes me laugh... laws and all or fake statues acts and codes.. No one can control over communication and yes. I will stand my ground on that.. anywhoooo.. what's the best? SICSEMPERTYRANIS Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum Vi veri universum vivus vici "There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact". I will stand my ground on that.. anywhoooo.. what's the best? Quoting: 4thhorseman Well, that is good, I take the same idea with my two hobbies (Scuba\radio) but for your needs(or wants), I don't see much use in going beyond a baofeng, or >$100 radio in general. If you will barely use it(maybe tune around every now and again, but primarily for emergency comms), and stay unlicensed, then there won't be much to do with a "full featured" HT. Mainly because most hams won't talk to you if you won't ID. Do you have a drivers license? I try to equate it to that to people that don't see the point(or even find it outrageous) re: getting licensed (but I do understand reasoning 100%). It's just most all HTs are 5W and dual band, and can transmit FM. The great limiter in your HT setup is your antenna and not the HT, you can upgrade to a handheld directional antenna like [ link to www.elkantennas.com] and increase your coverage big time, and still be under the $300 for some of these "premium" HTs Though either ways I will plug my favorite HT [ link to www.universal-radio.com] - menus are foolproof, integrated GPS, all that good stuff. This one is a bit smaller, same menus, no GPS, a bit cheaper, can receive some shortwave stuff [ link to www.universal-radio.com] If you don't like those, the other two "Big ones" for HTs are Icom and Yaesu.(manufacturers) Last Edited by kundalinichi on 01/18/2015 02:34 AM |

Quoting: deanoZXT Hey Deano, You getting some good rain up there? It just wont stop here. pouring cats and dogs... just curious for the extended PNW.. Quoting: 4thhorseman Yes! Going on about 6 hours of flat out pouring. Actually been picking up the lat 2 hours. It's kinda windy too. Not like windstorm windy, but enough for an occasional gust to make the house creek and pop. I'd say a few gusts up to about 20 25ish mph. But really this time of year, that's just a strong breeze. I actually haven't watched weather since the 11 pm news Thursday night. A big storm could be blowing in for all I know. I hope it's decent for the Big Game at noon. Light rain is ok, our Hawks can handle that. But gusty winds would be no good. Quoting: deanoZXT Hello to all you cool people!!!
