Just thinking about the hype I am hearing on the news about this blizzard in the N.E. Nothing against ya Simple. Just thinking out loud.
They are saying this could be historic. Isn't it normal to get a couple of feet of snow from time to time in that area? Yes, a few feet of snow is nasty but it isn't 5 or 6', would sound more historic to me.
Aren't blizzards normal up there any more?
I know that any time a city, no matter where, that gets a couple of feet of snow, it shuts it down, it makes the news, but historic?
I guess I am wondering if the media is again making a big deal out of normal. Help me understand that this isn't normal, even if does only happen a few times a decade or so.
Quoting: WhiteAngel It is normal. The way they've been throwing the word historic around makes me a little nervous. They just said a few minutes ago on the news that they're gonna be measuring the snow in feet, not inches... Quoting: Simple27 Or maybe it's the combination of the amount of snow and hurricane force winds.... Quoting: Simple27 Maybe that is it. Hubby's family and even him when he was little was from NY. They are all laughing over the news and how they sensationalize everything any more. I know when there is a possibility of a snow storm here that might be in the feet, the news folks go nuts. Yes, it is exciting but don't scare the crap out of people when it is just a big snow storm. One year, we had a little storm coming in. 2-4" of snow was forecasted. The night before they upped it to 3-6". That morning they upped it again to 4-8". It was already snowing and already had a foot on the ground, which was funny. By noon, they said we would have 18" of snow, yet there was already 2 feet on the ground. By 4pm ( remember because these were news hours) they were calling for 3-4 feet of snow. The next morning, when the snow was over, there was over 5 feet of snow and drifts of 6 feet. Now THAT was historic |

Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated*5.4 Japan*5.1 Papua New Guinea ~ Pg 20353 Lots of candles. If you do lose power which means heat, make a fort in the warmest room of your house/apt. You know those things you made as a kid, or a tent. Put your bedding in there. Take your candle and put it in a metal can and set it inside a terra cotta flower pot if you have it. This will act as a small heater and keep you from freezing to death. If you run out of candles, use shortening/Crisco, the solid white stuff. Stick a wick down the middle and this will work for 45 days, or so it claims. I think Gomez tested this and might have more info on this. How to make the Crisco candles [ link to bondbeautyful.com] How to DIY candle wicks [ link to www.instructables.com] Also, I would just keep a taper candle and shove it down the middle of the shortening. If you are using the shortening to make smaller candles, use birthday candles. Be careful not to leave candle burning while sleeping. In the terra cotta pot, partially cover. Quoting: WhiteAngel Quoting: Simple27 The ceramic or terra cotta flower pots work because they have a hole in the bottom. Also, the risk of fire is much lower. I saw a video a while back that a guy in Britain used a couple to keep his one room flat warm after he lost his job. Quoting: WhiteAngel I just worry about my cat. She's not the brightest thing lol. She would try jumping onto it! Quoting: Simple27 If it was me, and I had a cat (yes they like warm places), I would put it in a roasting pan to keep it stable but big enough around that it would have good air flow. Oh, and a squirt bottle on hand! Maybe placing a metal chair (those folding ones would work) or something else like that, over the pot would help keep her off it. |

I know all about coughing up a lung or even a big toe, and this is really making a big difference. Sometimes Nyquil works and other times, it is like water, doesn't do a bit of good at all. Try wrapping a hot hand towel around your neck. If you know of anyone that can get you some vapor rub that would really help. I put a little in a little pan of water and heat it up to simmering, drape a big towel over my head, close my eyes (it burns) and just breath for about 10-15 minutes. Old fashion helps a lot. Tea with honey and lemon and yes a shot of whiskey added also works - better than cough medicine. |
