It seems busier than "normal" perhaps the CME's incoming, yearly alignments and rarer ones (great year) etc. and relative increased earth instability are contributing. Or it's simply bumpier) but the data is amazing regardless.
Considering all the factors it is an exiting time to be observing)

Good morning folks. Here is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Wednesday. Solar activity this morning declined to lower levels following a period of high activity. Sunspot 1944 produced the largest event during the past 24 hours, a strong X1.2 solar flare at 18:30 UTC. The event was associated with a Type II radio emission with a velocity of 1064 km/s, and a 10cm radio burst (TenFlare) measuring 8,300 sfu. A bright coronal mass ejection (CME) was produced and directed mostly to the south and west, however there does appear to be a noteworthy Earth directed component. Earth bound proton levels gradually increased following the flare and reached above the moderate S2 radiation storm threshold. Departed sunspot 1947, now located behind the west limb, produced an impulsive M3.6 flare at 03:47 UTC. This particular event was associated with a Type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 697 km/s, and a westerly directed CME. No impact on Earth is expected due to this event. All other visible regions are currently stable.

As noted above, a moderate S2 level radiation storm remains in progress following the X1 event, all while teetering very close to the strong S3 threshold. These levels are expected to slowly decrease as the day goes on. More information regarding radiation storm classes and their effects at the following link.

A geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the next 48 hours as the coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the X1 flare is expected to sweep past our planet. Impact is predicted to be early to midday UTC time on January 9th (Thursday). NOAA is calling for geomagnetic storming to reach as high as the Strong G3 level. Sky watchers at mid to high latitudes should be alert for visual aurora during the next few days should the expected CME impact materialize. More updates to follow as things unfold.
