Sea stars affected by 'melting disease' found in Kachemak Bay

A mysterious disease that causes sea stars to form lesions, lose arms, and eventually completely disintegrate was recently spotted en masse in the Gulf of Alaska.

What happens eight to 17 days after viral infection is the onset of lethargy and the appearance of white lesions, National Geographic reports: "Sometimes the animal's arms rip themselves off and walk away. Eventually, the sea star deflates into a pile of white slime."

While sea stars affected by a Densovirus commonly called "wasting disease" were identified months ago in Southeast Alaska and sporadically farther north, scientists had hoped chilly waters in areas like Kachemak Bay would thwart the disease that has killed millions of the top predators since 2013.

4 found dead in South Anchorage home

Neighbors concerned as police investigate 4 found dead

ANCHORAGE -
Anchorage police are investigating the discovery of four bodies Wednesday at a South Anchorage home.

Four people found dead at South Anchorage residence

A relative of someone who lives in the fourplex where the bodies were found reported the discovery at about 12:30 p.m. on the 500 block of East 74th Avenue, said Anchorage police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

Based on evidence at the scene, police have labeled the deaths as "suspicious" as opposed to an apparent accident such as carbon monoxide poisoning. No suspect was in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.

A neighbor, 62-year-old Larry Olsen, said he saw a man he believes is related to a woman who lives in the unit banging on the door at about the time the bodies were reported.

Stone circle discovered in Britain older than Stonehenge

The archaeological discovery is being classified as "amazing" as indicates the existence of an advanced civilization in the Dartmoor area about 5,000 years.
The stone circle has the impact of Stonehenge, but should be older (Stonehenge was probably built between 2,000 and 3,000 BC). What excites scientists are indications that there have been, for nearly 5000 years, a civilization that can be considered advanced.
"It's incredible to imagine this civilization, which would have an ancient language and would behave in a completely different way," said Mike Nendick, the archaeologist who is spokesman Dartmoor National Parks.
About 30 are fallen rocks, but would form a circle of 34 meters diameter.
The archaeological discovery is recent and has only just been reported. [link to www.tsf.pt]
