Thousands of Indonesians refuse to leave volcano danger zone

TANAH KARO, Indonesia (AP) — Thousands of villagers are refusing to leave their homes on the slopes of one of Indonesia's most volatile volcanoes despite warnings that it is poised for a powerful eruption.

Mount Sinabung, one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, has been at the highest alert level for nearly two weeks. On Tuesday, at least 48 avalanches of hot ash barreled down its slopes, with the biggest reaching 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) southeastward. The volcano in northern Sumatra, one of Indonesia's main islands, has also been shooting smoke and ash more than 700 meters (2,300 feet) into the air.

MANILA >> A Philippine volcano spewed plumes of ash Tuesday, but volcanologists say the steam-driven explosions do not indicate an imminent violent eruption.

Mount Bulusan ejected ash up to .6 mile high for about 10 minutes and a smaller explosion hours later lasted a minute, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology director Renato Solidum said. There were no indications that the activity involved magma rising from below, he said.

The institute reminded local government units and the public that entering the 2.5 mile radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited. Pilots were advised to avoid flying close to the summit due to possible sudden ash explosions.

Bulusan, one of 23 active volcanoes in the Philippines, is about 240 miles southeast of Manila.

Volcano Calbuco erupted on April 22, 2015, for the first time in four decades. Located close to the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt in southern Chile. We spend the prior couple of days on the neighboring volcano Osorno (~20km linear distance) shooting timelapses. After an amazing night under the nightsky we took the cable car downwards after a delay caused by repairs. Already late we headed south to catch the ferry on Routa 7 down to Patagonia. After 10min on the ferry we noticed a massive, almost nuclear looking cloud boiling upwards just were we left a few hours ago. Frenetically looking for a good outlook we then rushed to the only non-forested place to get a decent view of the show. We quickly put every bit of camera-equipment we could find on the constantly growing mushroom-cloud. We shot timelapses in 8K and 4K with a Pentax 645Z and Canon 6D. On the A7s we shot 4K video to the Shogun. We filled almost all of our memory cards in the prior night so I had to do backups while shooting all this stuff.
This was for sure the most incredible show I've ever seen. I think this is a one in a lifetime event and I am so happy that we were able to capture it in all its glory.

In General Japan News,

Light ashfall detected, as Japan's most active volcano erupts
A small scattering of ash has been detected on the Japanese island of Honshu, suggesting that its most active volcano has erupted. No clear view of Mount Asama can be seen at present, as it is shrouded in mist today (June 16th), but the presence of ash points to renewed activity.

There have been no reports of any injuries or damage as a result of the eruption, but it could signify further instances in the future. Japan is experiencing heightened activity at present, but the situation is being closely monitored.

Located on the Pacific Rim of Fire and home to no fewer than 110 active volcanoes, the country is well-versed in safety procedures. The most volatile peaks, which number 47, are monitored 24 hours a day to ensure evacuation plans can be carried out when necessary.

The 2,570-metre tall Mount Asama is situated just 90 miles from Tokyo on Japan's main island. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said no smoke could be seen, due to the clouds, but light ashfall 2.5 miles away and higher readings from temperature sensors suggested an eruption had occurred.
