I like small communities best. Not totally alone, but not in a big city either.
 Quoting: Kira mai Kadwalladyr

Ideally, I'd be on a mountain top with a clear line of sight for a mile in any direction and at least 20 miles from any community with a population larger than 10,000. I wouldn't be alone. I'd invite like minded people that I trust with my life as they trust theirs with me. A valuable skill set would be a bonus.

As long as there's timber, fresh water, fertile ground and abundant wildlife we'd be set. I'd rarely, if ever, come off that mountain. Life would be grand!

 Quoting: Simple27

I checked the graphs. There was a little movement of the water column but it was less than a meter. It was enough to trigger the alarm, but not enough to be concerned of any significant tsunami. The buoy will now continue to flash for 24 hrs and stop (assuming there's not another shift in the water column)

You have no idea how close I am to doing just that. I'm only still here because my daughter is still young and would be devastated if I took her and moved out of state. Although I have been working on it with her and she's becoming more open minded about it.

For me, I have no problem whatsoever moving to a place where nobody knows me. Where I can have a bit more privacy. I'm very open online, but in my day to day life away from GLP (the very little amount of time that is, lol) I'm very quiet and observant. I'm a 'people watcher.' I watch everything going on around me physically. At least the best I can at any given moment. I am more so referring to whenever I leave my home. But of course I watch from inside my home too.

I don't really care to converse with people around here, with the exception of maybe 3 who aren't family. Ugh, family is even worse lol. Can't converse with most people around here because I don't care to talk about FB and what's going on in so and so's life that I went to middle school with and haven't communicated with since then. I truly don't give a f*ck where she was an hour ago, lmao. But seriously, I don't at all.

Idk, I'm being judgmental. I'll stop. What I'm trying to say is that I would be just fine living somewhere that no one knew me. And I got to choose who my new associates and friends would be. No one would be 'by default' if you know what I mean.

You should give it a shot Simple. You would love being able to walk outside in total darkness and actually see the stars in the sky. My youngest son spent a couple of years in WY and 9 here in AL. He still calls WY home. The whole world changes when you get away from the big cities and population.

THE TIME OF THE MAXIMUM TSUNAMI WAVES.

* PERSONS CAUGHT IN THE WATER OF A TSUNAMI MAY DROWN... BE
CRUSHED BY DEBRIS IN THE WATER... OR BE SWEPT OUT TO SEA.

Sometimes you just need to dive into something new head first and worry about how you land later. Some of the best things in life happen on impulse.
 Quoting: Sol Neman

Some temporary devastation isn't necessarily a bad thing. Your child will hate you sometimes if you parent the right way. She may very well hate you for a few months. She will come around and eventually understand why you chose to do what you did.

In all reality you're better off doing it now while she is young rather than later. It will only get more difficult if you wait.

Personally, I'd rather deal with a disgruntled child temporarily than continue to live in a place that makes me unhappy.

I am speaking from experience, my life growing up was in a constant state of flux. By the time I graduated high school I had lived 3 different communities, 100's of miles apart. Attended 5 different schools, lived in 15 different homes. Had 2 step-dads and 1 step-mom. I won't even get into the reasons for the numerous divorces and moves. Needless to say, change was the only constant in my young life.

Do I regret this or feel sorry for myself? Hell NO! Quite the opposite actually. It was some serious character building and certainly taught me not to take anything for granted. Were it not for that childhood, I wouldn't be who I am today.

What I am trying to say is think about what's best for your child and yourself. Not how they (or you) may temporarily feel.

New fire boats to withstand possible mega-earthquake

PORTLAND, Ore. -- In a mega-earthquake, Portland's water lines could be wiped out. Fire hydrants would be useless.

The city of Portland has two brand new state of the art tools to fight fires, even if all the city's water lines and fire hydrants go down. They are high-tech fire boats.

 Quoting: Sol Neman

Sounds great. If you ever find it let us know !
 Quoting: Gomez

Trust me, I've been looking. I am certain I will find what I am looking for here in Montana. Just saving the coinage now. It will happen...if the world doesn't end in the next couple years...

What I find may not fit all criteria but it will be close.

But I must admit, there is something about the city that I love too.

I'm adaptable, but part of me would miss it. The other part of me would be so grateful I left it.

Double edged sword...
 Quoting: Simple27

I believe once you got away from that environment and settled into a less populated area you would find that you'll be happier in the long run. That's not to say there wouldn't be an adjustment period and some home sickness. That's completely normal. We (humans) are naturally resistant to changes.

Also, it's not like you can't go back and visit.

Because your daughter is young, she will adjust just fine. Might have a little rebellion but that will subside as she makes new friends. Where she can lead a life closer to real America. Give her that opportunity now while there are still places like that. Otherwise she will only drink the Kool-ade.

You should give it a shot Simple. You would love being able to walk outside in total darkness and actually see the stars in the sky. My youngest son spent a couple of years in WY and 9 here in AL. He still calls WY home. The whole world changes when you get away from the big cities and population.

I grew up 60 miles south of the border in Montana. I could almost be considered a southern Canadian, eh... ;)

I have thought about Canada as well as Alaska in addition to Montana. All good choices as far as I am concerned.

They probably posted it immediately after they saw the magnitude of the quake more for CYA than anything. They then reviewed the data and determined there wasn't enough movement to cause concern and canceled the warning.

Imagine if they hadn't issued the warning and there were a imminent tsunami threat? People would freak out and wonder where the warning was. Lawsuits, etc would ensue shortly thereafter.
