yikes! not a good spot. Of course, not much of anyplace is in Japan these days.

There are times when I have to brake suddenly when I have felt them go all the way to the floor and kind of hold. I don't know if the brakes need bleeding because of air in the hose or if the abs wasn't calibrated properly, but it's something I have been meaning to get checked out and probably will go ahead and do next week.

Most tire shops won't allow you to change just one. At a minimum you should replace 2. Unless your car is all wheel drive then you have to replace all 4. It can actually lead to mechanical failure if you only replace one due to minor size differences and a few other things.

I do find it hard to believe that they cannot simply put a 'plug' in your current tire if it's only a nail. If there's a gash or hole on the sidewall I understand, but if the hole is on the tread portion of the tire there should be no problems with using a plug. That's assuming the tire itself is not worn out.

Personally I'd take it to another shop if they're telling you to replace a tire due to a nail puncture and that they're willing to only sell you one tire. That sounds like a shady mechanic that either don't know shit or assumes you don't and is trying to fleece you out of 300+ dollars.
 Quoting: Sol Neman

I was at the Toyota dealership getting an inspection sticker when they noticed it. The potential problem and reason they couldn't just patch/plug it is because it wasn't on the tread. It was closer to the outer part (towards the street) of the tire. I forget what they called that part of the tire.

When my jaw dropped at the price for the one tire they said it was because it's a 19" tire.

I've only had this car for a year and a half. Tires are all in great condition...aside from the nail. But they checked to see if it was leaking and it wasn't (phew!) and the sensor light inside my car wasn't on which was a good sign but they still wanted to check for a leak.

: )
 Quoting: Simple27

That does make sense now why they would recommend changing it due to location of the puncture on the shoulder of the tire. Since it isn't leaking currently you are better off leaving it as is, however keep a close eye on it. They most likely would have made it worse attempting to repair.

I agree on tire prices, basically any tire that has a wheel size larger than 16" are quite expensive (I don't know why, they have less rubber than a tire that uses a smaller wheel...but they know they can command high price and people will pay)

I still don't agree with their assessment to change just one. Even though your current tires are in great shape, the new tire will still be slightly larger which can lead to mechanical issues down the road. Simply put it is just a bad idea to change only one tire. They should always be replaced in pairs.

I have a hard time believing the dealership doesn't know this. If due to ignorance they need to hire a new mechanic, if not then they are simply assuring job security as you will be back to buy more expensive parts that prematurely wear out or completely fail.

Sorry for the rant...most of my family are mechanics by trade (including myself when younger). Nothing aggravates me more than a shady mechanic that takes advantage of their clients due to their clients lack of mechanical knowledge.
 Quoting: Sol Neman

The shoulder...that's it! Lol, thanks. They did leave it in there since it wasn't leaking. It also looks like a small nail based on the head of the nail. So hopefully it will be okay.

I actually feel better hearing that the price was at least realistic. Still wouldn't want to pay it though. Never in my life have I paid that kind of money for a tire. Not that I've had to have tires replaced often. Maybe twice since I've been driving, but I've never even heard of anyone else paying that much.
 Quoting: Simple27

Never buy tires at a car dealer, markup is always high.

Please, for your safety and everyone else on the road, get your car to the shop. Brakes and steering are not things that should ever be pushed aside when it comes to maintenance. Other systems can be brushed off for a bit in some cases but brakes and steering are extremely critical for obvious reasons.

When you take it in make sure you mention the fact that the brake pedal seems to stick or hold. That could be a faulty seal inside the master cylinder. Other things could cause that, but that's where I would start my troubleshooting after a visual inspection of the entire brake system.
