Julie Dutton, geophysicist with US Geological Survey, said shortly before 3 p.m. that based on waveforms seen Thursday, officials don’t believe the incidents to have been from an earthquake — but they couldn’t be sure.

The USGS picked up waveforms throughout the New Jersey area. Dutton speculated the incidents could have been sonic booms from military aircraft, but had no confirmation. She expected to have a better idea of what caused the shaking by 4 p.m.

A spokesperson for Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst said no operations that would cause such a boom were taking place.

Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronadry said he’d been told the same, and was still trying to determine what caused the shakes.

State Police told New Jersey 101.5 around 2:30 that they were still investigating the incident.

A caller to the New Jersey 101.5 newsroom who identified herself as Kim, and said she lives in Toms River, said “My entire house shook. Everything shook.”

Diane in Barnegat, who called the Deminski & Doyle show Thursday, said she’d felt shakes six times, starting at 1:25 p.m. “I thought it was a bad wind storm but there were no trees rustling. Then the glasses on the shelves started to shake,” she said. They got stronger with each shake, she said.

“Felt the shake 5 times between 2:19 and 2:36 (in Berlin),” Steve Czarkowski wrote.

Garvin in Whiting, who lives in a trailer near the Berkeley Township line, said he was home when the earth shook: “It felt like a big truck going by. Boom! Boom! Boom!”

Sue Moll, morning show host for WOBM, said at 2:20 that she’d felt Bayville shake three times.

Now the question is what's going on that USGS wants covered up?

I read an article the other day that said the shoreline on the east coast was literally falling into the sea. Need to see if I can find that again.

Hmmmmm....

SEISMIC SURVEYS FOR OIL

The Obama administration’s 2014 decision to open up offshore oil and natural gas exploration in the Atlantic Ocean creates not only long-term risks from climate change and oil spills, but also more immediate threats to ocean life. The plan allows seismic testing that the federal government admits could kill or injure 138,000 dolphins and whales, including nine endangered North Atlantic right whales, whose calving grounds are on the southern edge of the proposed zone. In total, a Department of the Interior report on the seismic program acknowledges, the plan would cause 13.5 million instances of harm to marine mammals.

Seismic testing involves blasting the seafloor with airguns (a kind of powerful horn) every 10 seconds and measuring the echoes with long tubes to map offshore oil and gas reserves. While a Bureau of Ocean Energy Management factsheet describes the technology as “state-of-the-art computer mapping systems,” seismic testing is actually a blunt-force weapon introduced in the 1920s that was augmented by computer analysis starting in the 1950s.

Sonic booms mistaken for earthquakes in New Jersey, Long Island

Sonic booms from fighter jets flying offshore were mistaken for earthquakes by residents along coastal New Jersey and Long Island Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Residents reported that buildings shook and the ground trembled — but the US Geological Survey said there was no seismic activity in the area.

Aircraft fling faster than 761 mph — the speed at which sound travels — create deafening booms that sound like explosions.

An official for the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst told News12 they did not hold exercises Thursday that would have caused a sonic boom, but the USGS blamed the noise on aircraft breaking the sound barrier.
