That's what I like about this place. There are a lot of threads here, people here on GLP, but this is a community to itself. It's like it's own little neighborhood in GLPtown. Not everyone agrees or shows up to the block parties, but the heart and soul is there in every one of us.

Thanks Simple.

Close comet flyby threw Mars' magnetic field into chaos
Just weeks before the historic encounter of comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) with Mars in October 2014, NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft entered orbit around the Red Planet. To protect sensitive equipment aboard MAVEN from possible harm, some instruments were turned off during the flyby; the same was done for other Mars orbiters. But a few instruments, including MAVEN's magnetometer, remained on, conducting observations from a front-row seat during the comet's remarkably close flyby.

The one-of-a-kind opportunity gave scientists an intimate view of the havoc that the comet's passing wreaked on the magnetic environment, or magnetosphere, around Mars. The effect was temporary but profound.

Yeah. Not compared to a lot of you. But I had a weird long day stating at 7am. I get at work a bit late, about 7:20. All is well. Then 3 hours later, nothing to be done. So I get sent home. Still get paid for 4 hours, so no biggie. Other then just time wasted. Get home, eat. Go grocery shopping. Back home to drop them off.

Then to Target to get a some toiletries and a birthday card for my brother. Stopped into COSTCO to get a new iPod, big bag of beef jerky and box of assorted candles. Was going to get a hot dog and soda. But it was a bit before 1 o'clock, so the deli lines were way to long. But I bump into someone I haven't seen in about 3 years.

She was and ex girlfriend. She waves and stuff at me, from like 30 feet away and over 20 people. So I have to go over and say something at that point. We chat for a minute. She fucking talked me into going to get lunch and catch up. I load up the car, and we meet at the Taco place a few blocks away.

Long story short, She married and has two kids already. So she's doing good, and she seemed happy. She married the second guy she met after me and had kids one after another, they got married after she was pregnant the second time. All the time in about 3ish to 4 years since we left each other. My how things change. That was why I moved on, she wanted kids and I didn't. So I'm gland she moved on and did what she wanted. I did make sure to order a margarita and Corona. To seem like an alcoholic, drinking about 2pm. Just at the hopes she doesn't want to keep in touch. But I see just an hour or two ago, she friend requested me on FB.

yada yada yada.

Lol, I sense your frustration with this encounter.

I never enjoy bumping into old friends who want to chat it up. It's one thing to make plans in advance to meet up/catch up with an old friend, but the bumping into someone at the store sucks when it's not someone you care to be catching up with. You handled it like a gentleman though. ;-)

Well, to yadda along with you. Several weeks ago I get a text. Four of us girls are on a group text. One initiates a text to get everybody together, any time is good. I throw out the next couple weekends, 2700 texts later April 9th is decided upon. Girl who started text couldn't make any of the suggested dates due to the most ridiculous reasons you can imagine took a week at times to even respond. Now I know why I withdrew from social activity.

Good story deano, funny too about the drinks. Why not just refuse the request? No sense giving mixed messages.

 Quoting: joinca

When comet Siding Spring passed Mars, the two bodies came within about 140,000 kilometers (roughly 87,000 miles) of each other. The comet's coma washed over the planet for several hours, with the dense inner coma reaching, or nearly reaching, the surface. Mars was flooded with an invisible tide of charged particles from the coma, and the powerful magnetic field around the comet temporarily merged with - and overwhelmed - the planet's own weak one.

At first, the changes were subtle. As Mars' magnetosphere, which is normally draped neatly over the planet, started to react to the comet's approach, some regions began to realign to point in different directions. With the comet's advance, these effects built in intensity, almost making the planet's magnetic field flap like a curtain in the wind. By the time of closest approach - when the plasma from the comet was densest - Mars' magnetic field was in complete chaos. Even hours after the comet's departure, some disruption continued to be measured.

This one paragraph has more info about that:
Unlike Earth, Mars isn't shielded by a strong magnetosphere generated within the planet. The atmosphere of Mars offers some protection, however, by redirecting the solar wind around the planet, like a rock diverting the flow of water in a creek. This happens because at very high altitudes Mars' atmosphere is made up of plasma - a layer of electrically charged particles and gas molecules.

I remember seeing that very well. Joinca, do you think either of the two incoming can wreak any havoc with earth?

This one paragraph has more info about that:
Unlike Earth, Mars isn't shielded by a strong magnetosphere generated within the planet. The atmosphere of Mars offers some protection, however, by redirecting the solar wind around the planet, like a rock diverting the flow of water in a creek. This happens because at very high altitudes Mars' atmosphere is made up of plasma - a layer of electrically charged particles and gas molecules.

That's true, we have our magnetosphere, its comforting.

Between that and the fact Mars has almost no magnetic field to protect it from the suns the radiation fluctuations.
