Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated*5.5 Afghanistan ~ Pg 20354 Asteroids could threaten Earth, scientists say(CNN)The threat of deadly asteroids hitting our planet is real, according to Asteroid Day, an organization hoping to stop a future catastrophe. Scientists worldwide are observing Asteroid Day on Thursday, June 30. The day falls on the anniversary of the Tunguska event, the largest asteroid impact yet to be witnessed. In 1908, a powerful asteroid struck the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in a remote Siberian forest in Russia. The asteroid's collision was so powerful that people more than 40 miles away were thrown from their porches and chairs by the sheer force of the impact, according to NASA. So how likely is it that an asteroid will hit Earth in the near future? The agency has a spacecraft called NEOWISE, which stands for Near-Earth Object Wide-field Survey Explorer, to track asteroids and comets that could hit our planet. Since 2013, it has discovered 72 new near-Earth objects. Of those, eight are classified as potentially hazardous to our planet, and could approach or hit Earth one day. Quick update for those who were around the other day when I mentioned it... Already heard back from both jobs I had a 1st interview with on Monday (which is record time - I guess they were trying to pare it down before the holiday). I did not get a 2nd interview for the local job that I wasn't as interested in. So, I was ok with that, especially since I at least felt good about the interview. The out of state job I am really interested in invited me to a 2nd interview on site, which will be in later July. It will last for 1/2 a day and I'm petrified because I have to start the day at 9am doing a 30 minute presentation to the whole department that would essentially be my peers. Regardless of whether I get the job or not, I just hope I at least do a good job and don't look like an idiot. I really am freaked out about it. Going to talk to some people this weekend in my field and get some feedback on what to include in this presentation so that might calm me a bit. They already booked my airfare, hotel and ride to/from the airport so I can't back out now. Quoting: KickinIt Yeah!!! Good luck, you can do it!! Spread the word, change the collective conscious...... A few minutes after that story was mentioned on the news, there was a story about a puppy left in a car today at a store. Puppy as in maybe 10 weeks old. Tiny, baby puppy. It was making such an awful sound because it was suffering that people nearby heard it and an officer broke the window and got it out and gave it water. It was HOT around here today. 85 degrees and humid. This little 6 pound puppy was literally being cooked inside that hot car. Screeching in agony. I know that most people are acting like this, their head is "elsewhere", thinking about other things. Another thing happened yesterday in Frankfurt, a man drove in a pedestrian zone into a crowd of people two times! He used a leased car. I'm glad to completely move away from there in a few weeks. . |
