Some good news: The Benedictine Monastery of Norcia has been turned into a shelter and makeshift hospital even though they did sustain some damage. The monks have mules and carts and are going to nearbye villages to rescue who they can. People are arriving there on foot also.

The really good news is their brewery seems to be okay so far and they are handing out cold beer to people who are seeking shelter. This is how the monks make their living - selling beer. Praise the Lord and pass the bottles.

Re: Earthquake Alert~Always Updated
Of course the Vesuvio and Campi Flegrei (including the Solfatara) are monitored 24/7 because 3 milions people are living in that area and there aren't any serious organized plan to evacuate Naples and the surrounding urban area. Their only chance to survive is to evacuate as soon as there is any concrete evidence of an incoming eruption.
 Quoting: HicManebimusOptime

The central region where the EQs struck are referred to as Perugia BY the people in the region where I lived. I was not stating that Perugia is in the South. If you know Italian history you know why the southerners do so.

We had evacuation plans. There were to leave the house or building you were in and go stand in the nearest field, in our case that was a large lemon orchard on a hillside overlooking the Bay of Naples. The second thing was to bring a large amount of cloth that were dampened to use as face masks. That was it. Everyone was told to stay off the Dominze because traffic would be horrible.

Vesuvio spews ash frequently because I had to keep it out of our house [closing percianas] and had to wipe down furniture. Air quality in the summer was poor, but the region itself and its people are beautiful and that made it worth it. There was a Salfatara vent about two miles from our home. On bad days, steam and sulfur emissions were constant.
 Quoting: -Haun-

The quake mainly struck an area between 3 regions: Lazio, Umbria and Marche (a bit less a fourth one, the Abruzzo) not just one. Perugia is the capital of the Umbria and part of its namesake district is just a small part of the area hit by the quake. Either you don't understand the administrative division of Italy or the people you talk with have no clue which area we are talking about (it might well be, it's not a very well-known area for people not used to visit those locations).
I'm sorry but I don't get what Perugia has to do with Southern Italy. It's a city in CENTRAL italy and its only link with today's quake is that a part of its district is part of the area struck by this event.

I know that there are *theoretical* evacuation plans but if you actually knew Italy and above all the citizens of Naples you'd understand that in practice those plans will not be worth the paper where they are written on. When the Vesuvio will wake up there will be a catastrophe; no one there is ready for such an event.
 Quoting: HicManebimusOptime

We are having a complete failure to communicate. Its okay I've enjoyed the discussion. I know where Perugia is and you probably know where Pozzuoli is.

The evacuation plans were completely tongue in cheek on my part and thought they would give you a laugh. I thought it was pretty funny because these were the written instructions given us by the Guarde Di Finanza when we moved to Pozzuoli. If Vesuvio really blew, we would be as dead as the people of Herculanea clutching out little wet cloths to our faces. There really is nowhere to go.

Yes, as I told you, there are plans because the law requires to have them. Almost every town in Italy would be required to host refugees coming from Neaples in such a devastating situation. I'm not denying that there are plans; I'm just stating that in reality, even with a minor eruption, it will be almost impossible that those evacuation plans would properly work.

Unfortunately this will go on for quite a long time. Hope is that other active faults nearby won't get busy; the entire Apennine mountains area is such a mess, one of the most dangerous areas in Europe for EQs

I think we need to start being concerned about the areas that haven't moved yet:

The Cascadian Subduction Zone, New Madrid Seismic Zone, and the San Andreas.

I had the strangest dream this morning before I woke up. Looking at a news screen, the entire US West Coast was lit up with at least four 7.0 earthquakes.

Then, a 9.5 hit the New Madrid first, followed by a 9.3 hitting Washington.

Went back over the 24 hour data - this started at 13:00. There is a moderate spike at 13:35 and then the major spike just past 14:40.

Forgot to add, the yellow and reds show that it is close to Georgia, USA or that it is very large. PPFSC is rather magnified compared to other feeds but it is the best one at this time.
