The sun has a diameter 400 times that of the moons. It also is 400 times further away than our moon, giving us the impression that both are the same size. Eclipses happen often enough, but it is the perfectness of the sizes and placement that make full solar eclipses special.

No such thing as coincidences.. Everything, cosmically and earthly are in their respective, exact places for a reason.... these full solar eclipses give credence to that fact imo.

I think I'm allergic to careers lol

Anyone doing anything fun this weekend?
 Quoting: Master of Nothing

haha MoN, I'm in your boat. I lost one of my jobs this week. Position and program being eliminated. You may not know this (and others likely don't remember), but because it's so damn hard to find a decent F/T job in my field, I've been working 2 P/T jobs for a few years now. I make significantly more money that way, but still work 40 hrs/wk. No benefits of course, but it was a choice I had to make. Well, now one of those jobs is gone. The better paying one, of course, and the one I liked better. I have two weeks to close things out but I definitely cannot live on just the one so I have already put feelers out and have emailed some people to let them know I'm looking. I know what's out there because I never stopped looking, but I'm hoping one of my connections pays off and I can at least find something comparable P/T to supplement the loss, because considering the history, I don't see me landing an awesome F/T job anytime soon. The whole thing is fucking frustrating. I've been in so many dysfunctional work situations it's almost comical. I feel like there is a dark cloud over the career portion of my life.

I'm actually feeling better than expected about all this. I was pretty upset for the past few days but once it finally happened (I had inklings, then confirmation, before I got the official notice), I felt better. Namely because I managed to say some very blunt things to the people firing me, which needed to be said. They don't care about the people this program was serving (their own employees), and the way this was handled on their end, which was disgusting and overtly disrespectful to all involved, was proof of that. Fuck those fuckers! I have landed on my feet every other time a job has been yanked from under me, and I will do it again.

Oh, and no exciting plans this weekend other than some happy hour plans tonight. at least that's my only set plan thus far. I'm really just biding my time till Eclipse Day!

Damn kickin'.. i'm sorry you lost a gig this week. That blows hard, and i feel for you. Glad you've been planting your job potential seed around though, i'm sure something will fall into your lap soon enough. Also really bothers me the way they apparently neglected you along with others. Its a terrible sickness, where companies and corporations view their employees as assets and not human beings. Where profit is valued more than a human life. It makes me sick...

The system has dealt us all a rigged deck of cards and we have to play our hands the best we can. Shit is mind boggling and frustrating, but just keep your head up and stay as positive as ya can. You have a long line of supporters alone on this site... as well as a long line of shots awaiting at your happy hour! LOL

I was worried we weren't going to get our eclipse glasses in time, but according to tracking they should be delivered today. My youngest is 10 and I'd hate for him to miss this. We aren't travelling (eff that!) but we are in upper 90% for completion. Now we pray for a clear day!

They are calling for a clear day here in VA - but wouldn't surprise me if its cloudy, they can't predict anything anymore.

I need to grab some glasses.. maybe to late to order them.

Anyone know of any stores selling them?
 Quoting: Master of Nothing

There isn't any glasses to be found in the Denver metro area. Even 7 to 11's are sold out. Around here, Wal-mart, hardware stores and things like that all had them at the beginning of the week. They were sold out by Tuesday.

93% eclipse here.
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

I haven't seen them sold anywhere here in northern va... i'll look today but probably all sold out too if they are anywhere.

Our local news this morning was saying... If you can't find glasses, then cut a small hole in cardboard, hold it up so light travels through the hole, and you'll see the small white light on the pavement be eclipsed.

yeah... i wont be staring down during this eclipse lol
 Quoting: Master of Nothing

They have been showing the same trick here also. Yeah, no
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

I think you can do it with binoculars too, YouTube it to verify and get instructions. 71% here in NEPA. I'll be watching it live on YouTube. That one of the more recent Iceland (I think) eclipse was kind f mind blowing. Someone posted it here couple weeks ago.

Red Supergiant Star Antares: Unknown Force Pulling Parts of the Star's Surface into Space

A trio of researchers with Universidad Catolica del Norte and the Max-Planck-Institut fur Radioastronomie has found evidence that suggests that convection alone cannot account for the amount of material that is pulled from the surface of a red supergiant.

In their paper published in the journal Nature, K. Ohnaka, G. Weigelt and K.-H. Hofmann describe their study of the supergiant Antares, what they found and why they now believe there is an unknown force pulling some parts of the star's surface into space.

The red supergiant Antares is familiar to stargazers as the heart of the scorpion in the Scorpius constellation. It is thought to be between 15 and 18 times as massive as the Sun, and have around 883 times its radius. Hence, if placed in the center of the Solar System, its outer surface would lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter—it is also at the end stages of its existence.

Prior research has also shown that red giants have atmospheres that extend far from their surface—Antares, for example, has some regions that would extend all the way to Mars if it were in our solar system.

The prevailing theory explaining such far-reaching regions has been convection cells carrying the material away from the star. But now, that theory might have to be changed as the researchers with this new effort have found evidence that suggests convection alone could not lift as much material from Antares as they have measured.
