A friend of mine came over tonight and we walked to a nearby bar to get food and watch the hockey game. It's only 2 blocks away - just a few minutes walk, yet I can't believe how cold we were walking home just now. And we both had multiple layers, scarves, hats, gloves, etc. It's brutal!

Back from a vacation in South America. It was great! I went to an area that experiences frequent earthquakes and didn't feel one. Weird, but good!

It was definitely an odd experience spending Christmas there. I was there several years ago and noticed how Americanized it's become there since then.

I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and will enjoy toasting the New Year with you all.

Hugs to all that need one!
Quoting: a Dude, not THE Dude

Dude, South America is my dream trip! I've had it all mapped out for years, just need about 4 months off of work and/or win the lottery and I'm there! I likely will have to end up doing an abbreviated version of this trip that wouldn't take so long - I have that mapped out too. I would love to know where all you went and what your favorite places were. I'm also very curious to know where you were that was americanized?? I've never heard of anywhere in S. America referred to as "americanized", unless maybe it's a place where there's a lot of Ex-Pats. But even those locations are still very Latino.

Anyway, I'd love to hear more about this if you feel like sharing. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to blast it on the thread.

Thanks for the welcome back, everyone! (Sorry I didn't mass quote all the welcomes).

If you speak Spanish, you could get temporary work down there as an English teacher or translator and pay part of your way that way.

I went to Chile with a brief jaunt into Argentina. I didn't go to most of the really cool stuff, like the ancient runes. The more Americanized place we visited was La Serena. We stayed in Coquimbo. Both La Serena and Coquimbo have decent populations of people from different nations (a lot of which retired there). In most of Chile, women wearing shorts is very very rare, but in La Serena it was a lot more common, even among the native population. The stores and restaurants contribute to the Americanization. There are 3 Wal-Marts in the area for crying out loud. English is becoming MUCH more common there.

We went on a whale watch that also visited the Pingüino de Humboldt National Reserve and saw a lot of penguins, sea lions, otters and other birds. We went to Vicuña and visited a vineyard that was also the Centro Astronomico Alfa Aldea. They had a planetarium and good telescope. We also got some good views of the surface of the sun.

We visited the beach and the mountains around the Embalse la Laguna. Those mountains have so many different colors. It's gorgeous.

It was the start of Summer there and the weather was absolutely beautiful. It stayed in the 70's during the day (at the warmest near the Pacific, the lower 80's in Vicuña) and dropped to the mid-50's at night.

The desert was still green because they recently had record levels of rainfall, so the landscape was gorgeous.

The food was really good and the fruit was much better quality (and fresher) than what most of the States get.

One thing to be cautious of is that Chilean culture is very different in that stealing is very common. VERY common. The general outlook seems to be "If I can take it and get away with it, it's okay." (Argentina even has signs about Chilean thievery and that it's their culture.) Watch your wallets!

On another trip, my wife went to Macchu Pichu, but sadly we didn't have time or money to go there this time.

Other than the cost of the plane tickets, the prices were very reasonable and the money exchange rate is good.

Breakfast hasn't caught on much there. Typically it's a light meal consisting of some bread and fruit late in the morning. (they like to sleep late and stay up late)

About 2-3 is typical lunch-time and that's the big meal of the day. If you can find restaurants open later than 7 PM, it's surprising as most eat a light dinner at home around 9 PM. A lot of the towns have a vibrant night life into the wee hours of the night.
Quoting: a Dude, not THE Dude

Thanks for the nice recap, Dude! Did you happen to go to Mendoza when you went into Argentina? That's one of the destinations I plan on. You were maybe 150 miles from there in La Serena.

You said: "Argentina even has signs about Chilean thievery and that it's their culture." This made me laugh, because I've heard Argentinians have issues with Chileans and vice versa. I have no idea why, probably because they're neighbors, but they don't like each other. I have a really close friend of many years from Argentina, and I also know a gal from Chile, so that's where I get this from. But you saying you saw that sign about Chileans being thieves totally fits in with what I've heard about their feelings towards one another, so I found it funny.

I've heard mixed reviews about Chile. Not that it's a bad place to visit, but I've read and been told that if you have limited time in S. America, it's one of the places to skip. That's hard for me, because I've had a fascination with Chile since I was a kid (I was a weird kid). And if I'm forced to do my abbreviated trip, a quick side trip to Chile seems a must if I'm as close as Mendoza.

Ever been to Uruguay?

I know!! I don't want to go into the new year sick! I feel like that's a bad omen!

This morning at like 6:30am I woke up with a bad belly, took some more Ny-Quil and went back to bed. Woke up around 1:00pm coughing my ass off and all congested. Made a glass of water with Emergen-C in it, took 1000 mg of chewable (lol) vitamin C and now have made a vodka cocktail.

Gotta make some buffalo chicken dip for game night which starts at 6:00 (just over an over from now).

The struggle is real!

I'll push through until Monday and then I will rest my ass off! tounge
 Quoting: Simple27

Well you can look at being sick as detoxing, getting crap out of the body. That's a great way to go into the new year.

 Quoting: KickinIt

Sadly we didn't have time to go anywhere interesting in Argentina. We were just touring the mountains. Apparently, Chile is where a LOT of Argentinians spend their vacations because of the monetary exchange rate and the Chilean beaches being nicer and warmer.

Oh, another thing about South America... The Spanish-speaking countries all speak Spanish you'd recognize. Chilean Spanish is a different animal altogether. They speak more rapidly and cut off conjugations, which makes it difficult even for native Spanish speakers from other countries to understand them all of the time.

There are spots in Chile that are wonderful. There are spots that are awful. Avoid Santiago at all costs unless that's the only plane ticket you can get.

If you are limited on time and budget, it really depends on your goal as to whether you should skip Chile or not. Since you're fascinated with it, I'd say go for it!

No, I've never been to Uruguay, nor have I been to any other bit of South America yet. I've been twice, and both times I stayed in Chile because I know some people that retired down there and I could stay with them to save costs.

If you do go, there are a few things to remember:

Chilean police are great. It's a national pride that they aren't corrupt and actually take pride in their job. Do not try to bribe them. (Not that I would bribe any officer of the law anywhere, unless forced into it)

They have weird jobs and everyone expects a tip for it. For example, there are guys that hang out in parking lots to direct you to spots or to tell you it's okay to back out....and they expect tips for it. Most are too polite to say anything if you don't tip though. If you make it to La Serena, you'll see people selling all sorts of things at intersections...including bottled water. It started with college kids trying to make a buck and spread like mad.

Getting use to driving via kph instead of mph takes a little getting used to. Their speed limit signs are just circles with a number on them.

Do not try to bring fruits, vegetables, nuts, or really any uncooked food into Chile as they are VERY strict about that and will confiscate it. We took some fruit as snacks out of Chile when we went to Argentina, returning the same day. They wouldn't allow us to bring the rest of that fruit back into Chile.
