5/04/2018 -- Kilauea Volcano NOW DRAINING along w/ Pu'u O'o crater collapse and flow

Kilauea volcano's lava lake is now draining. This event is occurring in addition to the Pu'u O'o crater collapsing and releasing its magma into nearby Hawaiian subdivisions.

A new fissure has formed to the East of Pu'u' O'o, and the magma from Kilauea is now added into the mix.

There is going to be an extended large lava flow coming not only from Pu'u O'o's collapse, but now the draining of Kilaueas magma chamber is something which may increase flow amounts + duration.

The two volcanoes are connected to each other deep below, and are several miles apart.

Last time we had something like this happening at Kilauea was shortly before the Japan 2011 earthquake. I've posted about this before. And I think dutch has said that prior to the Japan earthquake there was significant activity at Kilauea.

I hope the severity of this doesn't mean the Cascadian Subduction Zone is about to blow.

hiding

And holy shit a 5.0 earthquake hit Hawaii!!!!!!!

ahhh

Update: Hawaii had a similar earthquake (and subsequently at least a few 5.0+ since then) in 2011, FYI - 4.6.

Interesting to note that Hawaii did have a 5.0 quake in February, 1994 - very shortly AFTER Northridge.

OK, I have a home about 15 miles from where the eruption has taken place.

A few things need to be cleared about the Big Island...

1.) It is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.

2.) The Big Island is divided (by the USGS) into 9 lava zones. You can get house insurance for homes in lava zones 3 and above. The likelihood of a lava hitting a house in lava zones 3 and above is small. Lava zones 1 and 2...they are SOL!!!

3.) Leilani Estates - where the eruption is now taking place...is in lava zone 1 (IIRC...it may be lava zone 2)....either way...it is EXPECTED that those places will get lava flows.

4.) Yes, an earthquake of magnititude 5.0 or higher is fairly big....I have been in a 4.8 and it is...ummmmm...unsettling! That said...there was a greater than 7.0 off the north coast of the Big Island....and I felt it...but, I didn't feel like the "end was near." It depends upon the distance and depth of where the EQ hits. I am not at home right now...so, I can't tell you the "feel" of that latest 5.1.

Oh, ummmm, you may want to IGNORE THIS REPLY...

The Big Island of Hawaii IS the most beautiful place on earth....I have seen 3 feet of snow on top of Mona Kea...while I sit in 80F weather down below....it is never cold....I have trees in my yard that if it got below 50F they would die....they are over 30 feet high :-)

I think a new fissure opened recently. There is a strong glow on the webcam overlooking the lower east rift. The eruption earlier was not visible on the webcam as far as I know so this might be in a different location a bit further down. I might be wrong though about the location of the last fissure, it happened in the day so there was no visible glow.

This guy is on the scene and was one of the first to spot the original fissure. Whether he is actually meant to be there is another matter, but he is and has confirmed that another fissure started and is live streaming it. It is also in Leilani estates but on a different street on the other side of the subdivision.

Looks at least as strong as the previous one, though that could be because it is at night so the incandescence of the lava is obvious. Lava fountaining above the trees right now.
