I'm starting to learn with all this recent stuff that I guess it depends on the volcano. The lava they spew isn't necessarily the same, for one. Joinca posted something earlier about this.

All of it is so tragic, but the film coming out of Guatemala is nothing short of terrorizing. The only comforting thing I can come up with as I watch these videos in tears is that at least those who died, died quickly. But heck, the fear they felt up to that point just doesn't seem fair.

Pyroclastic flows...

The volcano sits at an elevation of more than 12,000 feet and is one of three in the area near the city of Antigua. It’s a stratovolcano, meaning it’s built up over time to have steep slopes, especially near the cone. They’re some of the most common—and most deadly—volcanoes on Earth, and they emit a combination of lava and pyroclastic flows.

“In Fuego, the main devastation was due to the pyroclastic flows,” Mather told Newsweek. “This is very different to a lava flow.” Pyroclastic flows are a mixture of hot gas along with volcanic matter, like ash and rock fragments, she said. They are incredibly hot and can travel faster than a moving vehicle in some cases.

[link to www.newsweek.com]

A pyroclastic flow (also known as a pyroclastic density current or a pyroclastic cloud) is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter (collectively known as tephra) that moves away from a volcano reaching speeds of up to 700 km/h (430 mph). The gases can reach temperatures of about 1,000 °C (1,830 °F).
