I hear the seismologist now saying that in this depth of close to 90 klm, the quakes are about the stress escaping from the crash of the tectonic plates and have little to do with surface faults. Good thing it was so deep Stay Safe And in the sea! thank you! Yes! was there any building structural damage? |

AKObserver User ID: 62125329 United States 08/29/2014 01:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Explosion shakes BP's largest oil refinery in the U.S. A fire broke out at BP’s largest U.S. refinery on Wednesday night after a compressor exploded in one of the refinery’s units, sending shakes through local homes and injuring one worker, according to media reports. The explosion is the latest mishap at the company’s Whiting Refinery in Whiting, Indiana, which in March was responsible for leaking up to 1,638 gallons of oil into Lake Michigan. That incident occurred less than two weeks after the U.S. lifted BP’s ban on seeking new oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico. The Whiting refinery is a huge operation, producing up to 423,500 barrels of oil every day. It’s the seventh-largest refinery in the United States, and was recently upgraded to process oil from the Canadian tar sands. BP said it had contained the fire as of Thursday morning, and that the plant continued to operate. The plant itself has drawn opposition from environmentalists because of its proximity to Lake Michigan, which supplies drinking water for seven million people in the Chicago area alone. AKObserver User ID: 62125329 United States 08/29/2014 02:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Brutal Winter? Almanac Could Be Wrong, NOAA Says The 2015 edition of the Farmers' Almanac hit shelves Aug. 25, and its contents aren't heartwarming for the winter-weary. This winter will see "below-normal temperatures for about three-quarters of the nation," the Almanac reads. The new winter outlook also predicts that the Northern Plains and the Great Lakes regions of the U.S. will be hardest hit. But the predictions included in the Farmers' Almanac are just that: predictions. And these forecasts could be wrong, according to Anthony Artusa, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. While NOAA's official three-month outlook for the coming winter months isn't due out until around mid-October, Artusa said that meteorologists are not seeing the climate conditions that would indicate what the Almanac refers to as a "record breaking winter." "We don't see anything offhand that would suggest it would be a really brutal winter," Artusa told Live Science. The Almanac's forecast implies that certain complex weather conditions are expected in the coming months, something that Artusa said he has seen no evidence of in recent weeks.
