Major Solar Flare
Geoeffective Sunspot 2158 produced a strong solar flare this afternoon measuring X1.6 at 17:45 UTC. Because the region is in a great position, if a coronal mass ejection (CME) is associated, it will likely be directed towards our planet.

This is pretty significant as the CME is currently expected to have a velocity of 3750 km/s!

Back in 2012 there was a CME with a velocity of about 2000 km/s:

"Between 1,800 and 2,200 miles per second puts it without question as one of the top five CMEs ever measured by any spacecraft," says solar scientist Alex Young at Goddard. "And if it's at the top of that velocity range it's probably the fastest."

This was the same flare which scientists classified as a solar superstorm:

Two years ago, Earth experienced a close shave just as perilous, but most newspapers didn't mention it. The "impactor" was an extreme solar storm, the most powerful in as much as 150+ years.
"If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces," says Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado.

However another indicator of a dangerous CME is its magnetic field- whether it is negative or positive.


"We measure magnetic fields in 'Tesla' and this CME was 80 nanoTesla," says Antti Pulkkinen, who is also a space weather scientist at Goddard. "This magnetic field is substantially larger even than the CMEs that caused large geomagnetic storms near Earth in October 2003. We call those storms the Halloween storms and scientists still study them to this day."

While large, this measurement of the magnetic field is still smaller than one of the greatest space weather events on record, the Carrington Event of 1859, during which the magnetic fields at Earth measured 110 nanoTesla.

So it remains to be seen how strong its magnetic field is and how much of the ejecta will actually impact Earth. This is as close as to a "kill shot" we have come in the last decades I believe. And we will know in about 24 hours (probably less!).

They re=named it in 2013 to Hawadax Island
The name was chosen by the native Unangan (Aleut) community and translates to "those two over there," referring to the island's two knolls. While nobody currently lives on Hawadax, Unangan people have lived or visited the island for millennia.

Does anyone know what the rating of the Carrington event solar flare was?

Still at an M2, I wish I had that kinda duration.

Leo Cabrera It has a radial speed velocity of +3400 km/s, will conjoin the M incoming, auroras for everyone Alerts R2, R3, R4, 10c, Concurrent. Forcast G2 for the 12th.
X1.6 Solar flare erupted from earth facing active region 2158 This will very likely cause an increase in the Proton radiation I would not want to be on the space station today. Satellites will need to go into protection mode and some services may be intermittent. Flights that are near the Northern and Southern polar regions should be re routed. If you are pregnant and about to take one of those flights you might want to figure out another plan for travel as the increased radiation could pose a health risk. So far, these CMEs from 2157 seem right in line with the ecliptic plane. For the next several days each successive CME from this region will be more likely to be Earth-directed. And if we gat a barrage, the CME Cannibalism and super-elastic collisions may become a factor, too.
