A storm slammed the Phoenix area Saturday, leaving tens of thousands without power and causing flight delays, flooding roads, toppling trees and knocking out traffic lights. More than 46,000 APS customers in the metro area were without power as of 1 p.m., spokeswoman Jenna Shaver said. Salt River Project reported about 31,000 customers were without power at about 3 p.m. SRP spokeswoman Patty Garcia-Likens said most of the outages were in the West Valley, but some were in Scottsdale and Tempe. She said crews are out working to restore power. Interstate 17 was closed for a time at Buckeye Road due to flooding, but Arizona Department of Transportation officials said at about 4:45 p.m. that it had reopened in both directions. Numerous power lines were down in some locations. The National Weather Service said the winds in the area were up to 60 mph. Trees were also toppled throughout the area. A flash-flood warning was issued for Maricopa and Pinal counties until 6:30 p.m. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport received a record 1.59 inches of rain, breaking the old record for the date of 1.46 inches set in 1903, according to NWS. Earlier, the airport had to evacuate its air-traffic control tower due to high winds, delaying Phoenix-bound flights. Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the Sky Harbor ground stop applied to flights coming from airports that are about an hour's flying distance from Phoenix. Sky Harbor reported that at about 3:50 p.m. flights had resumed and that 30 inbound flights were diverted to other airports. Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Ben Fantillan said that of the approximately 700 calls between noon and 4:30 p.m., about 400 were about weather-related emergencies. During
that time, special-operations units responded to 33 incidents, including rescues, gas leaks and other hazardous situations. Day two of the Summer Ends Music Festival at Tempe Beach Park was officially called off just before 3 p.m. Saturday. The reunited Replacements were scheduled to top the bill. The storm came from low-pressure system with an associated cold front that moved westward through the region, pulling tropical moisture in from the south, according to the National Weather Service. The Maricopa County Flood Control District reported the Gateway Community College area in south Phoenix received 2.83 inches of rain in three hours. Weather officials earlier reported that Buckeye was getting pelted with small hail and battered by 40 mph wind gusts. Meanwhile The Verde Independent reported on its website that more than 100 people were stranded at the 26th annual Verde Rivery Day at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood due to rising flood waters. Linda Hauk, a park ranger, said they were trying to extract people from the area. Meteorologist Valerie Meyers said this is a storm that is typical for the fall season. "This is not a monsoon storm," she said. "It is very much a transitional fall-type storm."

Wow, I just was talking to a friend of mine just east of Phoenix in Gold Canyon, She said it was raining like hell and her house was leaking all over.. Said it ruined a few pictures and everything was getting wet even with her running around trying to stop it..
