Ehhh...cold ain't that bad. I think it got to -19 last night, before windchill and I am not even in AK. It was -13 this morning on way to work with wind chill pushing it to -30. Just have to layer up, take the extra time to warm up your vehicle, and drive nice and slow on the solid sheet of ice we call roads...

Sol, are you sure none are in event mode?
Do you find it odd in any way?
 Quoting: Earth420

Yes, I'm sure. Just checked again - [link to www.ndbc.noaa.gov] - It takes a specific type of quake to cause a tsunami. Subduction quakes are the tsunami causing quakes. They make drastic changes to the sea floor. When the sea floor changes the water has to go somewhere. When there's a slip/strike quake where plates slide against each other, rather than move up and down, it does not alter the water column nearly as much or at all, therefore, no water is displaced, hence no tsunami.

The other thing is that the sea this quake originated in is relatively shallow, so there's not as much water to be displaced in the first place as there would if it occurred in the deep ocean.

The tsunami alert was issued regardless, due to the size of the quake, and after what happened in 2004 the officials are taking no chances.

If no buoys are in event mode, say in the next hour, I bet they cancel the tsunami alert.

I am debating heading back out this weekend to see if I can fill that elk tag. I don't have any chains for the truck and I would be by myself in a dead zone for cell coverage. That said, I bet this storm pushed some down the mountain and I'll have better chances. Choices, choices....

Yeah, we had to chain up the semi's to get out of the valley! This is a fierce cold spell for so early, especially since it had been in the 50's and 60's prior! I am starting to acclimate though! Unfortunately, it is reminding me of last winter, which was a real cold brute!

Hey I SO do not take it for granted! After being born and raised here, than doing 8 years in Idaho and a few months in Colorado before coming back I am very thankful I was jumping around like a school girl in a tank top and shorts a few days ago...
The irony...
But I do feel for you guys SO much! I am not much for the cold...

Oh, but if you ever need heat, you can try to imagine yourself on top of the sun or in the sun in space...
That gives me a heat "flare up" every time!

I am being reminded of last winter too.

I was already a bit acclimated, in September, I was on a motorcycle run, tent camping down by Dillon. The temps were in the single digits in the morning and never went above 45. When you ride a motorcycle at 70+ in 45 degree, or lower, weather, the feels like temp has to be close to 25 or 30 degrees. Granted that's warmer than what we have right now, but it did start the acclimation process. I do have to say though, shooting the canyon at 9 PM at night between here and Helena with clear skies is beautiful on the bike. Were it not for the 40 degree temps, and playing frogger with deer it would have been even better.

Aside from Indonesia, tsunamis could reach the Philippines, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and parts of Japan and Taiwan, the warning centre said.

The first tsunami waves could arrive within the next six hours, it said, warning that "the initial wave may not be the largest".
