Not quite a 40s nalstolic thing. But I like Noir novels, have ever since I was in high school. I like movies too. But a lot of Film Noir movies are foreign, and that bugs me. A lot of Noir Hollywood movies were made in the 60s. That's also why I like some of those cheesy made for TV Lifetime and Hallmark channel movies. A lot of them have Noir over tones and play classy and like novels. Yeah, I was weird when I was a kid. Watching Lifetime with mom at like age 15. Plus, who doesn't like a good plot with a sexy dame, a mean guy, the mob and the alcoholic cop and private eye looking in a murder.

Went bowling again tonight...149 second game. And I didn't get much sleep earlier because I was too excited about the Mark Baker clinic.

I'm finally out of a very bad slump - and these games are AFTER two hours of bowling earlier today.

Now to continue practice and focus on more consistency and breaking 200...

Soon baby. SOON!!!

Yes! Going on about 6 hours of flat out pouring. Actually been picking up the lat 2 hours. It's kinda windy too. Not like windstorm windy, but enough for an occasional gust to make the house creek and pop. I'd say a few gusts up to about 20 25ish mph. But really this time of year, that's just a strong breeze.

I actually haven't watched weather since the 11 pm news Thursday night. A big storm could be blowing in for all I know. I hope it's decent for the Big Game at noon. Light rain is ok, our Hawks can handle that. But gusty winds would be no good.

That is thousands of $$$ in gear - I am lucky my dad is a ham as well :)

I have several handhelds (or "HTs" as they are referred to (handheld transceivers)) ( [link to imgur.com] ) they work fine if you don't have high expectations for working out too far without good antennas on both ends. I have made simplex (radio to radio, no repeater) contacts with both ends being 5W handheld (HTs) to 52miles - that is because the other station was at ~5800ft above sealevel, doing what is called "SOTA", basically hiking to peaks and then operating from them. The reason I got that contact with my handheld is because of his height - his signal covered a good bit of the Puget Sound, as he was on the east olympics. At handheld (VHF\UHF) frequencies, the closer to line of sight between you and the other station, the better the reception strength will be.

You can usually expect anywhere from 1-25mi coverage with a 5w HT depending on terrain inbetween.

I surely have - this is just a partial 'map' of my contacts I have made over the past 2 weeks - [link to i.imgur.com]

and this is my other VHF\UHF antenna for 'local' comms - [link to imgur.com]

That's totally awesome!!!! Wish I had a set up like that..
I was just thinking about getting a handheld one for emergencies... Do you know if they work OK or not?

I'll take it, happily. Hahah :)

If you do begin your research and find that baofengs are what you want (cheap chinese radios, but hey they work, and the cheap pays off if you buy 2-4 to outfit family or whatever).. then look at upgrading the stock antenna. The stock antennas of most HTs are basically useless.

Or just buy an all encompassing package ( [link to www.radioddity.com] ) that literally is all you need, and as far as HTs go, quite a good price.

Now I must plug becoming a ham, because why not. It costs $15 from most all testing places, the test is a simple 35 question, 4-choice. Use [link to hamstudy.org (secure)] flash cards to study(entry level license is the "technician" exam) and [link to www.arrl.org] to find an exam site.

Goodluck either ways and goodnight :)
