Well that sucks... Some causes for high hemoglobin levels are as follows:Living at a high altitudeLung disease (emphysema, COPD) Cancer Tobacco smokingBone marrow disorders (polycythemia vera) Overdose or inappropriate use of the drug epoetin alfa (Epogen, Procrit)Blood doping (adding RBC's by IV to the bloodstream)Is it really bad if your hemoglobin is high?

High Hgb CAN be indicative of several blood disorders-but usually it's just something aberrant; either calibration or reading was wrong, or just something with your metabolism/O2 saturation when your blood was drawn. Depending on other tests done at the time & any signs or symptoms; they could ask for a repeat Hgb/Hct-which can be done with just a finger-stick. I had blood work done last week for a specialist. I guess they sent the results to my primary care physician (who I haven't seen in forever because my health ins. changed and they don't take my current ins.). I got a voicemail this morning saying my PCP wanted to see me because of the lab results and specifically mentioned my hemoglobin being high. I don't really know what to do. My insurance won't cover me seeing her and I don't yet have a new PCP. I'm nervous because of my recent chest pain. It gets so bad sometimes that it stops me in my tracks and I have to brace myself because of the pain... (when I say recent it's been happening for months)  When was your last chest x-ray?? Last summer when I was hospitalized overnight because of my heart rate. And released before it was lowered. Because they couldn't get it to slow down...
