Arkansas at risk for devastating earthquake

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - When we think of natural disasters in Arkansas, tornadoes or flooding usually come to mind. But if you ask some state experts what could do the most damage, it's a massive, devastating earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there's a 25 percent chance that Arkansas will see a magnitude-6 earthquake in the next 50 years. That size quake would do much worse damage in Arkansas than it would on the west coast and experts fear many Arkansans aren't prepared.

"Here in Arkansas there's a lot of what we would call 'Earthquake Burnout'. A lot of people, they can't see an earthquake, they haven't felt one, they can't smell one, it's not like a tornado where we have one every year and it's huge," said Katie Belknap, Earthquake Program Manager for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management.
