Obama Orders More Earthquake Resilience for Gov't Buildings

President Barack Obama has ordered all new or renovated federal buildings to be equipped with the latest protections against earthquakes.

Obama signed an executive order on Tuesday creating a Federal Earthquake Risk Management Standard. The White House says the standard will improve federal buildings' resilience to earthquakes, making them safer and lowering the costs for recovering from a quake.

Obama's order said that agencies constructing or updating federal buildings must ensure they're built with earthquake-resistant designs that meet the latest building codes. The White House said that following those codes is one of the best ways to save the lives of people living in a building.

The White House is also seeking to make more progress in deploying an early earthquake warning system along the West Coast. Federal agencies are exploring ways to speed up the permitting process for new seismic monitoring stations. . .

HOW TRUE IS IT? : FEMA predicts major earthquake on 6th Feb. 2016

There are rumors circulating about the big earthquake predicted by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that will happen on February 6, 2016 at 9:41 am. Is it true?

The rumor spread after the New Yorker magazine wrote an article about the threat of a catastrophic earthquake devastating the entire Pacific NW due a rupture of the Cascadia Subduction Zone in July 2015. The Cascadia subduction zone runs some 700 miles from northern California to Vancouver.

The article entitled "The Really Big One: An earthquake will destroy a sizable portion of the coastal Northwest. The question is when" created lots of buzz and interest.

Soon after, rumors claimed that a mega-earthquake with a magnitude of up to 9.2 will occur on Feb. 6, 2016 and would last for four minutes killing an estimated 13,000 people and destroying a sizable portion of the Pacific Northwest.

The rumors accelerated after FEMA blogged quoting New Yorker magazine with heading "The “Big One” in the Pacific Northwest: Taking conversation to action." FEMA is the United States Official website of the Department of Homeland Security. . .

As for casualties: the figures I cited earlier—twenty-seven thousand injured, almost thirteen thousand dead—are based on the agency’s official planning scenario, which has the earthquake striking at 9:41 A.M. on February 6th. If, instead, it strikes in the summer, when the beaches are full, those numbers could be off by a horrifying margin.

It is being stated that these projections are based on a scenario that has the earthquake striking at 9:41 a.m. February 6. (The agency isn't trying to predict the future or saying that the earthquake will definitely occur then, they just need a date to plan around.

I'm not posting because I necessarily believe this will happen on this date but
find the timing and info very interesting. . .
