Kel Pickens and his wife Carolyn West Mayer live in Stillwater, Oklahoma, one of the most seismically active parts of the state. They say they’ve experienced damage to their house, including separation of the cement steps, cracks in the driveway and small cracks in their walls. And they say all the damage has resulted from dozens of earthquakes in the area over the past two years.

“You’re getting some movement of the ground underneath here,” Pickens said.

New maps released by the U.S. Geological Survey reveal that seven million people are now living in areas at high risk for earthquakes. Not naturally occurring earthquakes but man-made - induced by oil and gas operations that pump wastewater deep underneath the ground. Parts of Oklahoma and Texas are at highest risk. Last year Oklahoma had more than 900 quakes, up from 3 in 2007.

Manchin fears EPA could close shale wells over earthquake risk

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin fears the government could begin shutting down shale oil and gas production if the industry can't find a technological fix to address earthquakes related to fracking.

The agency issued a report last week that said a heightened earthquake risk now exists for millions of people due to oil and gas production in shale regions, particularly Oklahoma.

There are enough scientists who have committed themselves in professional publications to the belief that the damage done by fracking is irreversible. Even if all fracking stopped now, which it won't, certain masses such as Oklahoma and its surrounding environs will remain at very high risk for ever increasing earthquakes.

You simply cannot induce earthquakes, even at low magnitudes, with the frequency with which they are occurring and not damage buildings, underground terrain such as deep caves, lakes, streams, forests, etc.

You can liken it to someone shaking the ground under your house with the same force as a 3 or 4 magnitude, but it happens several times a week. Sooner or later the house structure will collapse from the hundreds of unseen stress points deep in the structure. This is also true for the land.

Of all the catastrophically stupid things man has done for money, this one sits at the top of the pyramid.

He should be more afraid about whether or not Oklahoma is going to be in the same condition it is now in about five years from now. If we even have that kind of time.

But he probably won't be senator in 5 years so what does he care?

And we don't have that time.

The only thing they care about is the profits they can pocket right now.

They know exactly where this country is headed.
