We watched San Andreas again and several questions came up, some I could answer and others well, they are unknown.

The San Andreas Fault is a continental transform fault that extends roughly 1,300 km (810 miles) through California. It forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, and its motion is right-lateral strike-slip (horizontal). The fault divides into three segments, each with different characteristics and a different degree of earthquake risk, the most significant being the southern segment, which passes within about 35 miles (56 km) of Los Angeles.
[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

They called it the “most dangerous earthquake type in the world.”
The strike-slip fault has little to no vertical moment, the rocks sliding horizontally across each other as the earth shifts and pressure is released. San Andreas and Anatolian Faults are strike-slip. Reverse faults thrust two crusts together to push and thrust them on top of each other in a vertical direction, typically creating mountain ranges. Normal faults pull the blocks of crust apart, creating a rift.
[link to ricenorthwestmuseum.org (secure)]

First, while reading most of the two links above, it mentions and we have talking about when a quake happens it released pressure. When a quake doesn't happen it builds more and more pressure.

The family wanted to know what is keeping the San Andreas from popping off? They said if it hasn't happened and it being over due and all that jazz, then there must be a reason that the pressure isn't building enough to release.

Then they wanted to know, because it is a strike-slip quake, which way is the main part of CA going and which way is the ocean side going?

That sums up about 3 hours of discussion among the 4 of us with my son actually asking the two main questions above. Told you that kid was odd. Special needs with a lower IQ in most schooling but scores very high in other areas, almost genius levels.

chuckle I'm cooking a meatloaf right now, well I'm smoking it. Didn't have panko bread crumbs so I used Cheezit's, didn't have parmesan cheese so I used a couple slices of provolone and cumbled it with the Cheezits. Mixed it all up with some onion, garlic, mushrooms, bell pepper, sundried tomatoes, worcestorshire sauce, rosemary, thyme, dry mustard, eggs and ketchup.

The world is unprepared for impending natural disasters

For a long time, preppers and survivalists were ridiculed and called lunatics who just want the world to come to an end. However, as our planet entered a realm in which major natural disasters became a norm and officials finally admitted the world is heading into an uncharted territory, it became clear that preppers were actually just better-informed individuals.

Just crane crazy! Fearless daredevils hang over Moscow with one arm (DRONE VIDEO)

Everyone loves a city skyline, but two daredevils decided to observe Moscow from a terrifying vantage point, climbing a crane and hanging from it with one arm – all without a safety harness. The outrageous stunt is enough to make your heart skip a beat.

The video published on Sunday gets off to an “innocent” start with one of the daredevils standing on a narrow ledge on top of a building – but it gets much more heart-stopping than that.

Hello Angel! I dont think anyone really knows to answer the first question: Why the pressure isnt building enough to release? I think the movement is very slow so it takes time to build up the right amount of pressure in order to release it. Eg we know that the north part last released the pressure in 1906 (san fransisco quake), the los angeles area in 1857, but the southern part around Palm Springs hasnt released the pressure for 300 years. So the probability is to see this part hit first but we never know.

The second question unless i didnt undestand it, it is supposed that the two sides of the fault collide so it should be a north to south movement, right? I dont think it would be a great displacement.
In the ShakeOut senario i think they are more concern about the fires that will break out after the quake and the collapse of bridges and such.

Are you ready for the next big earthquake?

In recent weeks, residents in Japan and Ecuador have seen the devastating effects of powerful earthquakes. More than 600 were killed in Ecuador and 48 were killed in Japan.

With quakes striking days apart along the Pacific Rim, could the United States be next? The experts say it is impossible to tell, which adds to the angst from scientists.

Unlike hurricanes and severe weather, predicting the time and location of an earthquakes is impossible, and according to USGS scientist David Schwartz, scientists never will.
