It forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, and its motion is right-lateral strike-slip (horizontal). San Andreas and Anatolian Faults are strike-slip. Reverse faults thrust two crusts together to push and thrust them on top of each other in a vertical direction, typically creating mountain ranges. Normal faults pull the blocks of crust apart, creating a rift. [link to ricenorthwestmuseum.org (secure)] First, while reading most of the two links above, it mentions and we have talking about when a quake happens it released pressure. When a quake doesn't happen it builds more and more pressure. The family wanted to know what is keeping the San Andreas from popping off? They said if it hasn't happened and it being over due and all that jazz, then there must be a reason that the pressure isn't building enough to release. Then they wanted to know, because it is a strike-slip quake, which way is the main part of CA going and which way is the ocean side going? That sums up about 3 hours of discussion among the 4 of us with my son actually asking the two main questions above. Told you that kid was odd. Special needs with a lower IQ in most schooling but scores very high in other areas, almost genius levels. First and foremost the movie is all DRAMA from hollywood and is designed to sell movies with lots of CGI. FIRST Los Angeles is moving towards San Fransisco or the coast is moving north and California is headed south along the coast range or the San Andreas fault. see the arrows at this link: [link to geology.com] This part explains about the faults movement: How Fast Does It Move? (a couple of inches a year - about the same rate that your fingernails grow) The plates are slowly moving past one another at a couple of inches a year - about the same rate that your fingernails grow. But this is not a steady motion, it is the average motion. For years the plates will be locked with no movement at all as they push against one another. Suddenly the built-up strain breaks the rock along the fault, and the plates slip a few feet all at once. The breaking rock sends out waves in all directions, and it is the waves that we feel as earthquakes. We used to go just twice per year and do the whole tent thing. My parents now have a seasonal site in New Hampshire and they go every weekend during the season. I visit them up there a couple times per year usually. Might visit more this year. But now that they're seasonal it's a high end trailer (could literally be a mobile home) and not the real camping feeling that I enjoy. Things are still interesting and need to be watched, for sure. Bad storms today for me. At one point when they were rolling in, the sky was completely green. It was eerie. Bad winds as it first blew in - from what I'm reading in the local news it was up to 60+mph. At one point I heard hail, but it stayed very small and it didn't last very long at all so....NO car damage! whew. If you recall, I just bought a car in February, so now every storm that blows in I freak out about the car. From what I'm reading, we really escaped the worst of it. There is some tree damage, etc. around the area, but overall despite how it looked I think we lucked out. I know other locations in the line of this storm have had big hail and I think tornadoes as well. I bid you all a fine evening! |
