Humans are under threat from 'killer' robots and “there will be deaths” if new laws are not introduced to stem the advancing technological tide, an expert has warned.

Swiss lawyer Sebastian Fanti is calling for a treaty on robot rights to protect both humans and the machines from harm.

He says the law has fallen behind the terrifying speed at which technology is developed – putting the future of driverless cars and other projects at risk.

He said: “If the algorithm must choose between braking and killing the passenger who isn’t wearing a seatbelt or running over the pedestrian on the crossing, what will it do?”
