Can States Stop Man-Made Earthquakes?
In the Central U.S., where an increase in earthquakes has communities rattled, states are taking steps to understand what’s causing the tremors and put a stop to them.

Stopping an earthquake before it starts? It sounds like a feat possible only for a superhero.

But in Kansas and Oklahoma, state policymakers are showing that insofar as humans are causing earthquakes, they can stop them, too. After restricting oil and natural gas operations in certain hotspots, Oklahoma is feeling an average of about two earthquakes a day, down from about six last summer, and Kansas is feeling about a quarter of the tremors it once did.

Using a growing body of research, along with trial and error, scientists and state regulators are gradually getting closer to pinpointing the cause of the startling increase in earthquakes in the Central and Eastern U.S., and preventing them.

This was an article posted in December of 2015 but apparently resurfaced on July 9, 2016.

Oklahoma Earthquakes: Bombshell Doc Reveals Big Oil's Tight Grip on Politicians and Scientists

The bombshell documentary, which EcoWatch has previewed, explores the mounting scientific evidence that links earthquakes to injection wells, as well as the maddening hurdles and bureaucracy that state scientists and regulators face in their efforts to halt the potential crisis and national security threat.

Scientists have identified that the injection of large volumes of toxic wastewater left over from oil drilling and fracking operations into underground wells has triggered the state's now daily earthquakes.

In an interview with Cory Williams (D-Stillwater), the state representative reveals that state legislators have done little to address Oklahomans’ concerns. From 2009 until 2014, no earthquake-related bills were introduced, he said. "We’re jeopardizing life, safety and property in the state solely for the profits of oil and gas,” Williams claims.

In August, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin finally admitted that there was a “direct correlation between the increase of earthquakes that we’ve seen in Oklahoma [and] disposal wells” after denying the link for several years. In May, Fallin signed legislation preventing cities from enacting drilling bans, making Oklahoma the second state after Texas to ban fracking bans.

However, as state officials voice intentions to reduce seismicity, Oklahoma has cut the budgets of the two agencies dealing with the earthquake pandemic: the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) and the OCC.

In 2013, federal scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the OGS issued a joint statement linking the earthquakes to injection wells. OGS is based at the University of Oklahoma, which relies heavily on private funding largely from the oil and gas industry.

Former OGS head seismologist Austin Holland faced a lot of pressure for drawing a connection between earthquakes and wastewater disposal. He was summoned into a meeting with university president David Boren and Continental Resources oil executive Harold Hamm, who has contributed more than $30 million to the university. He was pressured to sign a 2014 position paper by former dean Larry Grillot, concluding that the majority of Oklahoma’s earthquakes were natural.

Holland resigned as head seismologist at OGS in August. “I’ve infuriated people within the university, I’ve infuriated people within the oil and gas industry.”

He said that earthquakes have always occurred in the state, adding, "If I was sure that there was never going to be anything bigger than a 3.0 that wasn't naturally occurring ... my blood pressure would probably go down a lot.”

"If a [fault] slips 10 or 15 or 20 miles, you’ve had it," Noble County farmer and retired electronics expert Mark Crismon says. "This state will go back to the Stone Age in about 3 seconds.”

Oklahoma Corporation Commission investigates Blanchard earthquakes

A spate of earthquakes in the Blanchard area has Oklahoma regulators scratching their heads, since there's not any active, deep disposal wells in the area.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said Wednesday it is investigating all oil and gas activity in the area after United States Geological Survey data shows nine recent earthquakes near Blanchard.

The earthquakes have been about 5 miles southeast of Blanchard in the old North Dibble Oil Field, according to USGS data. Blanchard is about 30 miles south of Oklahoma City. The commission said the Blanchard area is outside the 15,000-square mile "area of interest...there are no Arbuckle disposal wells within at least a 20-mile area of the earthquakes, all oil and gas operations in the area are being examined."

Thanks Warrior! hugs

I just got back home from a dermatologist appointment. I wanted to have a couple 'spots' looked at. One he froze and the other he said we'll keep an eye on. He then decided to look at my back to see if anything stood out. Immediately he says he wants to do a biopsy on a spot on my back (that I wasn't even aware of). :\

So I got scalped lol and will have the results from the biopsy in a couple of weeks.

What's freaking me out a little is that he took a pic of it and pulled it up on the computer so I could see it. It looks NOTHING like basal cell.

Always something...

San Andreas fault produces earthquakes in response to tidal forces

The gravitational tug between the sun and moon is not just a dance of high and low tides: It can also trigger a special kind of earthquake on the San Andreas fault.

This phenomenon has fascinated scientists for years. Like sea levels, the surface of the Earth also goes up and down with the tides, flexing the crust and stressing the faults inside. Further study found that during certain phases of the tidal cycle, small tremors deep underground - known as low-frequency earthquakes - were more likely to occur.

"It's kind of crazy, right? That the moon, when it's pulling in the same direction that the fault is slipping, causes the fault to slip more - and faster," said Nicholas van der Elst, a U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist and lead author of a new study on the subject published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "What it shows is that the fault is super weak - much weaker than we would expect - given that there's 20 miles of rock sitting on top of it."
