That entire region is referred to as Perugia in Southern Italy which is where I lived. All of the faults in Italy are connected. You should know this. They are also all very close because of how the landscape of Italy is constructed and its topographical features.

You also know Vesuvio and Salfatara are monitored and increased efforts are being made right now, at this time, to watch the lava domes not only visually but through instrumentation. Salfatara itself has street level vents in Naples and Pozzuoli which are easily accessed. If you've ever driven or walked into Naples from the south you would also know this.

300 klics in eruption zones are nothing especially in a zone like Italy again because of its topographical nature.
I'm very glad they have increased their awareness of what is happening now, and hopefully nothing will come of it. Keep them in your prayers.

the strongest quake ever recorded in italy was a 7.4. In southern italy some 7.0-7.4/7.5 is possible, in central italy the strongest quake ever recorded is a 6.9 (but a little bit south of today's quake). You won't see any 8 or higher in italy because the faults here are different than the ones in the pacific ring of fire, for example.

Latest update I heard was death toll at 20, but that many more expected as they're able to get farther into damaged areas/debris from fallen buildings, etc. I've been reading the first hand reports; amazing how far reaching effects felt (almost 300 mi.).

Heartbreaking!!! Also saw about 45 min. ago India hit a 6.9. I think.

Perugia is a city, the capital of the region of UMBRIA. So Perugia is not a region and it's not in southern italy, but in central italy. Perugia has not suffered any damage, nor have many villages and town whose buildings have been upgrated to the new anti-seismic standards after the latest quakes during the last years of the 20th century. The majority of the casualties lived in very old medieval villages and in very old houses that could not withstand such a quake.

If a simple quake could set off the Vesuvio this quake, the 6.9 that struck Irpinia in 1980 (very near to Naples -which suffered damages itself), would have definitely done it but it hasn't. The last eruption of Vesuvio happened in 1944.

Of course the Vesuvio and Campi Flegrei (including the Solfatara) are monitored 24/7 because 3 milions people are living in that area and there aren't any serious organized plan to evacuate Naples and the surrounding urban area. Their only chance to survive is to evacuate as soon as there is any concrete evidence of an incoming eruption.

I am talking about the alignment I posted about a week ago: the five-planet alignment occurring August 13 - 19th that caused the 9.3 Sumatran earthquake of 2004.

We are experiencing the after-effects. I highly doubt a two-planet alignment is going to have as strong as an impact as this one has had historically.

Look you can believe in what you want. Those five planets were not in an alignment with each other they were aligned in the night sky. That is a huge difference.

I guess it's a preliminar reading, but it must have been quite powerful because the reporter looked very scared. I have an app which sends me notifications of quakes in italy but I still haven't received anything; probably because they are calculating the exact magnitude.

You can attribute every large quake we have this august to the non-alignment but scientifically thebarcaroller is sound. Those are the alignments which cause the quakes TODAY and into late august.

it has been felt also in Rome from what I've read.

It is thus not an astronomical alignment, they only appear as a straight line viewing from the earth. I hope this clarifies.
