Have to write a quick reply because the situation is still ongoing. Notice how there continues to be quakes of high magnitude in both locations PNG and Solomon Islands. They are hundreds of miles away from each other!

I calculated the theoretical maximum magnitude if the whole plate ruptures between those locations. It is 8,56Mw. So there is the potential.

Interesting to see how this rather scary sequence ends.
