News just broke that BOTH directions are going to be closed for months. The southbound didn't collapse, but the local news is showing pics of all the structural damage underneath. GDoT declared it unusable

Hello all!

The month of March has been eerily quiet despite the recent 6.6.

If no further 6.3+ come today, this March has been the calmest earthquake month since September 2014.

Also, if no 7+ hits today, I calculated that the probability to get 8+ during the month of April increases to 40%. The normal probability to get one (2000-2017 statistical average) is around 7%.

So actually the probability for an 8+ to hit in April is over five times compared to normal. Again, I'm not kidding these are really the statistics. This probability increase is mainly because we have had two consecutive months without 7+.

To repeat the 188-cycle time window, this year it lands on 10-16th of May. This quake will be separate from the April forecast and the magnitude should be over 7.5.

APRIL 1ST COMET FLYBY: Green comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak is flying over Earth's North Pole this week where sky watchers can find it all night long not far from the bowl of the Big Dipper. At closest approach on April 1st it will be just 21 million km from Earth--an easy target for backyard telescopes and almost visible to the naked eye.

Why green? Like many comets, 41P has a verdant hue because its atmosphere contains diatomic carbon (C2)--a substance that glows green in the near vacuum of space.

Comet 41P is not only approaching Earth, but also the sun. April 12th is the date of perihelion (minimum distance from the sun). This means we are catching the comet just as solar heating is furiously searing its icy core. The green atmosphere should be well puffed up by streamers of vaporizing gas. Optimistic estimates of the comet's brightness place it at magnitude +6, near the lower limit of naked-eye visibility.

This is not a Great Comet, but it should be a good one. The best time to observe is during the dark hours before sunrise when the green fuzzball is high in the northern sky.

SUNSPOT SUNSET: Sunspots AR2644 and AR2645 have grown so large that some sky watchers are noticing them as blemishes on the setting sun.

Phew! Asteroid the size of a BUS came closer to the Earth than the moon last night

An asteroid as big as a bus came closer to Earth than the moon last night.

The object, dubbed 2017 FJ101, zoomed passed within 202,000 miles (325,087 km) of our planet.

But the near-Earth asteroid posed no threat to our planet or the moon, scientists said.
