AURORA SURPRISE: In a development forecasters did not expect, the speed of the solar wind around Earth sharply increased on April 21st. Earth responded with a bright display of Arctic lights. The sudden boost in solar wind speed might have been a sideswipe from the bright CME of April 19th. Ejecta from that explosion appeared on course to miss our planet. Instead, Earth's magnetic field may have received a glancing blow. [ link to spaceweather.com]
