List of 7+ lull periods between 2000-2017 (minimum 70days)
1. 99 days from 2001-02-24 -> 2001-06-03 7.2 Kermadec Islands, on the same month 8.4 Southern Peru. 2. 159 days from 2004-02-07 -> 2004-07-15 7.1 Fiji, 9.3 in Sumatra December 3. 77 days from 2005-03-28 -> 2005-06-13 7.8 Chile, two days later 7.2 Northern California 4. 87 days from 2006-08-20 -> 2006-11-15 8.3 Kuril Islands 5. 122 days from 2007-04-01 -> 2008-08-01 7.2 Vanuatu, on the same month 8.0 Peru, next month 8.4 Sumatra 6. 78 days from 2011-04-07 -> 2011-06-24 7.3 Aleutian Islands, 9.0 earlier on March. 7. 124 days from 2012-04-12 -> 2012-08-14 7.7 Sea of Okhotsk, 8.6 & 8.4 earlier on April 8. 127 days from 2013-11-25 -> 2014-04-01 8.2 Chile 9. 90 days from 2014-11-15 -> 2015-02-13 7.1 Mid-Atlantic Ridge 10. 73 days from 2016-09-01 -> 2016-11-13 7.8 New Zealand
Longer lulls tend to end with major quakes nearby, or start after massive quakes. Out of these 10 examples, only two did not have a 7.7+ in either end ( #2 and #9).
We have not seen 8+ after September 2015, therefore this current lull likely ends with a major bang. As of 04/22/2017, current lull has lasted 90 days which would make the fifth longest since 2000.
