Why the constant earthquakes? Iceland is slowly being torn apart

In an average week Iceland's national monitoring seismic network detects around 500 earthquakes. If one of the volcanoes is hit by an earthquake swarm this number can be even higher.

Iceland is being "torn apart"
The reason for this seismic activity is the location of Iceland on top the Atlantic ridge, the divergent boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates: As the two plates drift in opposite directions Iceland is in effect slowly being split apart. The rate of spreading along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge averages about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) per year, or 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) in a million years.

Hello all. I had an accident this morning and just got back from the ER a bit ago. I have a damned specialized neck brace on and have to see a neurosurgeon soon. Long story, old bones, bulging neck discs and one spiral neck fracture. The drugs, however, have been most excellent.

Lots going on today both in the earth and on the earth. Upheaval seems to be the word of the day.

The great thing is its Friday which will hopefully lead to some rest and comfort for those literally under the gun both physically and emotionally. Happy Friday everyone.

Thanks lady! It's been a busy week so I haven't been around as much. I'll be around over the weekend though. I have some plans, but nothing out of the ordinary. Some friends coming over tonight for happy hour and to see the new digs. We are expecting some severe weather here this weekend. Possibly tonight, but tomorrow looks worse. We're in the orange zone tonight - tomorrow red zone and they're talking about straight line winds. Those are never good.

I was just looking at the plotted quake map and I'd guess based on that maybe watch S. America?? Usually when a quake near north pole hits, something happens far south. Plus there's been a few decent sized ones in Central America, yet S. America is somewhat quiet.

Just a guess. Not very scientific.
