I have once - the 5.8 that hit Virginia in 2011. I'll never forget - I was walking out of my office building for lunch and noticed the semi-skyscraper building windows fluctuating and waving followed by hundreds of people evacuating and rushing onto the streets. Quite the rare occurance here in Northern VA. |

Quite the rare occurance here in Northern VA. Yes, I have. I've felt a few random small ones here and there, but the biggest one for me was a 5.2 in 2008. I'm in St. Louis and the epicenter was on the Wabash fault in north central Illinois, so it was felt pretty good here. The noise that accompanied it was like nothing I've ever heard, and it was the sound that initially woke me up (it was around 4:30am). As I woke up it took me a second to realize my entire house was shaking. My bed was shaking HARD and I popped up to run to the front of the house (not sure why). I had trouble getting my footing! It was like walking on waves, I'll never forget it. Freaky as hell. |

Getting things done with my car today, and totally ready to get driving Monday. I didn't miss a beat driving to the shop in traffic. Can't wait to really be walking without my walker at last!! I'm surprised too with a quake of that size in VA, but a lot of factors come into play. Like what type of structure you were in at the time. If you were still in your building on your way out when it hit, I would imagine it would be harder to feel inside a solid structure, especially if you're moving around. My house at the time was brick (current one is too). Lots of brick here in STL and lots of old structures, so if you're in an old brick house here you'll feel it! |

In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be: The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence. Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty. The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires We are at the end of the Age of Decadence heading into COLLAPSE |
