Update 14:10 UTC: Chinese earthquake specialists have calculated that 21000 people live at less than 20 km from the epicenter and 63,000 in a radius of 50 km. (both these area are dangerous for injuries/fatalities). 300,000 people live within a radius of 100 km.

Magnitude 7 earthquake hits touristy Jiuzhaigou area in central China

A magnitude 7 earthquake followed by a magnitude 3.3 aftershock struck the Jiuzhaigou area in central China famed for its natural beauty and popular with tourists late on Tuesday (Aug 8), state news agency Xinhua reported.

The quake hit Jiuzhaigou County at 9:19pm Tuesday at a depth of 20km, Xinhua reported, citing the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). The epicentre was initially monitored at 33.20 degrees north latitude and 103.88 degrees east longitude - not far from the area hit by a quake in May 2008 which killed almost 70,000 people.

The aftershock hit the same area at 9:41pm, the centre said according to Chinese media reports.

Update 15:06 UTC: The first (luckily only) injuries are reported. China's Seismological Bureau did start an emergency response. The Sichuan Military Region is currently verifying the earthquake impact and ordered the armed forces to convene the militia, ready to prepare.

Goes without saying that it's always sad to see deaths and injuries, I really did not mean to be cold hearted in that earlier statement. I think the disrepancy with magnitudes in this case is because of different seismic scales are being used. A 6.5Mw (moment magnitude quake is no joke either). I suspect the Chinese figures are of 7.0Ms (surface wave magnitude).

As to the suppression of data, China is one of the most strict regimes when it comes to witholding information. I think you meant that as a sarcastic note.

Update 16:49 UTC: the Sichuan Earthquake Authority has send tens of inspection teams to the area. If necessary these teams can provide first aid and call in additional support.

Update 16:48 UTC: The Jiuzhaigou scenic area has announced that starting from today and until further notice the area will be closed to tourists

Update 16:43 UTC: Maybe not visible in our earthquake list but people in the earthquake area are reporting a high number of aftershocks

Update 16:53 UTC: The Chinese Railways staff is currently inspecting High Speed Trains rails and bridges. As these have been build recently they are surely very earthquake resistant. As you can notice since we started our report (2 minutes after it happened) the Chinese earthquake response can be called "extremely professional".
