I was worried we weren't going to get our eclipse glasses in time, but according to tracking they should be delivered today. My youngest is 10 and I'd hate for him to miss this. We aren't travelling (eff that!) but we are in upper 90% for completion. Now we pray for a clear day!

Red Supergiant Star Antares: Unknown Force Pulling Parts of the Star's Surface into Space

A trio of researchers with Universidad Catolica del Norte and the Max-Planck-Institut fur Radioastronomie has found evidence that suggests that convection alone cannot account for the amount of material that is pulled from the surface of a red supergiant.

In their paper published in the journal Nature, K. Ohnaka, G. Weigelt and K.-H. Hofmann describe their study of the supergiant Antares, what they found and why they now believe there is an unknown force pulling some parts of the star's surface into space.

The red supergiant Antares is familiar to stargazers as the heart of the scorpion in the Scorpius constellation. It is thought to be between 15 and 18 times as massive as the Sun, and have around 883 times its radius. Hence, if placed in the center of the Solar System, its outer surface would lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter—it is also at the end stages of its existence.

Prior research has also shown that red giants have atmospheres that extend far from their surface—Antares, for example, has some regions that would extend all the way to Mars if it were in our solar system.

The prevailing theory explaining such far-reaching regions has been convection cells carrying the material away from the star. But now, that theory might have to be changed as the researchers with this new effort have found evidence that suggests convection alone could not lift as much material from Antares as they have measured.

40th reunion at a cool outdoor, mountainside tiki bar. Might be a hoot!

MoN, welding glasses will do the same job. I know nothing about welding glasses, but I'm sure if you do some googling you can ensure you get the proper ones. If there are different ones, that is - for all I know is they are all the same. Don't know much about welding! But a friend of mine who has some said they are cheap, so it might be worth looking into at this late hour.

To add to the initial conversation - 100% totality here, and right now they are calling for partly sunny and humid. I'll take it! Hoping that doesn't change (other than the humid part, but it is August in STL).

The sun has a diameter 400 times that of the moons. It also is 400 times further away than our moon, giving us the impression that both are the same size. Eclipses happen often enough, but it is the perfectness of the sizes and placement that make full solar eclipses special.

No such thing as coincidences.. Everything, cosmically and earthly are in their respective, exact places for a reason.... these full solar eclipses give credence to that fact imo.

I'll add my two cents to a good post MoN. Since the whole country gets at least a partial eclipse, we will have about 300 million people entering into, then coming out of DARKNESS. Very metaphorically powerful if you ask me. A gigantic boost of accelerated enlightenment. A good majority will be in the totality zone which only serves to increase the effect. Many millions more around the globe observing the eclipse and metaphorical enlightenment.

I suspect that it will be one of the most if not the most spiritually uplifting days in mankind's history, due to the numbers of humans involved and the symbolism. Hence the crazy week of Charlottesville and Barcelona (and whatever else they have concocted for next wo days) designed to counteract the monumental uplifting of humanity that will occur on Mobday.

I will be meditating/praying on best outcome for humanity and the planet on Monday.

The uplift will occur as you say MoN cause everything works the way it should. I'm so happy I could cry. No matter what the MSM airs we will be forever uplifted after the eclipse.
