Four Mile-Wide Comet Headed Towards Sun - 96P/Machholz Makes Closest Approach to Sun Oct. 27Comet 96P/Machholz or 96P/Machholz 1 is a short-period sungrazing comet discovered on May 12, 1986, by amateur astronomer Donald Machholz. Comet 96P/Machholz last came to perihelion on July 14, 2012, and will next come to perihelion on October 27, 2017. 96P/Machholz has an estimated diameter of around 6.4 km (4.0 mi). Comet 96P/Machholz will make its closest approach to the Sun, at a distance of 0.12375 AU or 11.5 million miles (18.51 million km).
