I'm not sure there is an official number/answer. Some of the New Madrid Seismic Zone earthquakes are considered to be aftershocks from the 1811-1812 earthquakes.
Quoting: Simple27 That one I knew. Crazy 100 years later but true. If the quake is from the same area as a large quake, they are aftershocks. The Tonga quakes made me think of that. Not building - aftershocks. Quoting: WhiteAngel From which big quake are you thinking? How long ago? Quoting: Simple27 There was an 8+ within the last few year - that one. Quoting: WhiteAngel Could be. : ) Just weird to me how they all popped off in such a small period of time. And so many 5+ magnitude.
