Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated*5.4 Japan*5.2 Gulf of California*5.2 Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge ~ Pg 20426

I grew up in a town that claimed they were "The Uranium Capital Of The World," in Grants, New Mexico. There was a community of one of the mines that had housing for the employees because when it boomed in the 1950's there wasn't any housing. We used to be able to see the yellowcake blow in the wind and used to go fishing in the talings ponds. Most people in that area worked at the mines. In the late 70's it boomed again and the population went from 10k to 50k+ in a year. Now, I have read they are once again opening some of the old mines to produce more uranium.

You couldn't even work in the office area without being cleared through the Department of defense in the 1950's. In the 1970's no one even cared. Anaconda had the largest above ground mine in the world, with one of the largest earth movers in the world. The other one was in Africa - a D9. I am sure they have bigger ones now.

I worked there just out of high school and the job was inventorying every nut, bolt, screw, on up to the D9. I had to climb all over those huge equipment pieces to get the VIN #'s. The bucket on the D9 could hold a house or two in it. Crazy huge and I climbed all the way up to the cab.

When they were closing most of the mines down in the early 1980's, government people came out to where I lived in their black vehicles and black suits and black sunglasses. I was out in my yard gardening and they were in front of my house with gieger counters that were going nuts. I asked them what they were doing and with stone cold faces, one said "Go back in your house ma'am." I was a cocky thing back then and said "No, you are on my property, checking for radioactivity and I will NOT go back into my house until you tell me what you are doing or leave. If you fail to do that, I will call my boss, the Sheriff of the county and my good friend who is charge of the State Police in this area and have them come out here and get the answers you don't want to give me."

They simple got back in their vehicles and slowly drove away. Jerks!!! They shipped those houses to other parts of NM, took down all the metal fencing around the homes and took them out to Jack Pile and buried them, along with anything else they couldn't burn.

Land reformation? Bull crap. They buried it and where I grew up was so hot that the gieger counter was humming a high pitched sound. Cancer? Huge spike of it in the people that lived in and around Grants, NM working in those uranium mines. A few friends that still live there, most of us left and are glad we did because they turned the whole place into a prison town with 4 major prisons built, have said the population will boom again because they are even in the process of opening brand new mines there.

I know for a fact (I worked in the geology lab) that there is enough uranium in those mines still that not one other place in the world ever needs to mine the nasty stuff. We almost moved to NV to the mines opening there. There is no need for those mines. No need to contaminate more country. So, this long assed post all was made for this reaso - what the hell is coming that they need even more mines opened??

Those poor people. Their island paradise, including offshore areas, is being rattled day after day.

Good morning everyone! ltana

Yesterday 38 degrees and snow, today 67 degrees. Compared to the Caledonia and Loyalty Island people, these weather changes are pretty small potatoes.
