It's always my own fault when they break :\

Spills would only potentially ruin the keyboard and mouse. It would also extend the life of your laptop a bit, and you'd still have the functionality to take the laptop elsewhere when needed. I haven't considered that. I'm not sure the laptop can be too far away from me though because then I'll be squinting lol.  That's why I said monitor too! You can get a 24 inch HD widescreen monitor pretty cheap now...Much better than a laptop's small screen.
