The #Kodiak earthquake was a strike-slip fault type event and is unlikely to produce a significant #Tsunami

They often don't produce any tsunamis, sometimes local tsunamis may occur due to landslides triggered by the quake.

"The M 7.9 occurred as the result of strike slip faulting. At it's location, the Pacific plate is converging with the North America plate. Over the preceding century, 11 other M7+ earthquakes have occurred within 600 km of today's earthquake."

I'm not quite as concerned about the Kodiak quake as I am about the potential behavior of the Cascadian Subduction Zone in the coming days.

Yeah... for sure.

That A.C. made a good point with strike slip events. They've produced big quakes with a lack of tsunami threats in the past stumping seismologists even. But it certainly appears a big wave is out there?

Is anyone else seeing the one tsunami buoy going off on the coast of NY/NYC? I don’t believe in coincidences, and it’s weird. Could just be a random anomaly?

Definitely interesting. Will keep watch. Hopefully nothing serious happens with the CSZ with the advent of the Super Blue Blood Moon coming.

Very concerned about that area now.

I have a dreaded feeling in the back of my mind that tells me: I don't think that this is over. All these tsunami warnings and watches aren't triggered for normal events. We have had quakes this large before in similar areas without much issue, and without any warnings following them.

This event is not normal.

The Latest: Tsunami warning canceled after Alaska quake

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Latest on an Alaska earthquake that prompted a tsunami warning for coastal Alaska, Canada’s British Columbia and the West Coast of the U.S. (all times local):

3:10 a.m.

The National Tsunami Center has canceled a tsunami warning that was triggered by a powerful earthquake off the coast of Alaska.

Mickey Varnadao, a computer specialist with the warning center in Palmer, Alaska, said early Tuesday that an advisory remains in effect for parts of Alaska, from Kodiak Island to Prince William Sound.

Watches have been canceled for British Columbia in Canada, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. Officials in Japan say there is no tsunami threat there."

Indeed it did. Like I mentioned, I don't think it's over. We have had similar events without so much a blip on the radar and no tsunami warnings/watches issued.

There's something different about this one, and I don't think it's over.

There was a tsunami buoy in the Bay of Bengal that went off for four days without a precipitating earthquake event due to sperm whales mating in that area.

Powerful enough to rearrange the bottom of the ocean pretty good. Possibly the 10 km depth helped in that regard. Doesn't seem too far fetched for an 8 to create a wave that high

Ok so now maybe someone will pay attention PSIGUY posted a while about this he told people in the Pacific north west to get out!

Also no one is reporting about this but if you use the app called my radar there is a no-fly zone in Alaska it's for a space launch I have been trying to get people to pay attention to that and nobody cares

I believe in early 2016 - was the last major strike slip event around Alaska. No tsunami threat from this one either.
