SOLAR FLARE AND CME: Magnetic fields threading the remains of decaying sunspot AR2696 erupted on Jan. 22nd at approximately 0300 UT: movie. The explosion produced a minor B9-class solar flare and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. Because of the blast site's location near the sun's western limb, the CME is unlikely to hit Earth. Nevertheless, NOAA analysts are modeling the CME's trajectory to rule out an impact.

According to a press release from the City of Kodiak, tide levels rose 3 feet over a period of minutes in the channel in Kodiak. Schools were opened as shelters on Kodiak Island, and about 500 people fled to those buildings, Kodiak Island Borough School District superintendent Larry LeDoux told the AP, adding that evacuees remained calm.

Minimal impacts were seen along the U.S. West Coast. Wave heights rose less than one foot along the Oregon coast, the Medford office of the National Weather Service reported.

Before tonight, the M7.8 & 7.7 earthquakes in 1987 and 1988 were the largest earthquakes recorded within the Pacific plate in the Gulf of Alaska region.

Now that is amazing

You are most welcome. What an event!

What I find amazing is, how lucky (relatively) we have been with these borderline 8's. Minimum number of casualties, and minimal tsunamis (if at all). Wonder how long it can continue like this.

Maybe the first 6+ aftershock will arrive soon, there has been 2h30min since a 4+ and 4h 30min since 5+.
