A street party is always fun. Even better with good weather. The weather here wasn't great - high of 48 but winds made it feel more like lower 40s. And really cloudy all day. Felt very cold once you were out there long enough. Hope you guys had a warmer day for it.

A quake of that size is scary enough to think about now with all the resources and better buildings (supposedly) we have now. I can't imagine enduring a quake that big back then. From the article:

"More than 28,000 buildings were destroyed by the 1906 quake and the resulting fires". It also said half of SF's population was left homeless. Absolutely devastated the place.

California earthquake standard designed to save lives but not buildings. There's a new push to do both

"California's seismic construction requirements are designed to protect the lives of those inside. But even with the most modern codes, building to the state's minimum requirements would leave even new buildings severely damaged in a major earthquake — to the point of being a complete loss.

Earthquake experts have become increasingly concerned about this, noting that a massive temblor would leave many without homes and offices for months if not years."

Port of Spain in grave danger of sinking

Trinidad Express:- Seismologist Dr Illias Papadopoulos says the city of Port of Spain is in grave danger of sinking below the ground in the event of a major earthquake.

He said two specific earthquake zones are posing a major threat. The zones are located north of the Gulf of Paria and within the Gulf of Paria.

Papadoupolos said the city of Port of Spain is at a greater risk of devastation because of water saturation.

Papadoupolos said buildings falling apart would not be as much an issue as buildings being swallowed up into the ground. “You might not see the buildings cracking and collapsing but you will see the building sinking,” he said.
