Earthquake bill likely stalled

The outlook appears dim for earthquake-related legislation introduced Monday to create an injection well safety advisory task force.

The disposal of saltwater in injection wells is blamed for contributing to earthquakes. House Bill 2786 would establish an advisory task force that would review if the injection well-regulating Kansas Corporation Commission is complying with requirements. It also would consider if new requirements are needed “to incorporate recent scientific evidence regarding injection-induced earthquakes and to protect the citizens and communities of Kansas.”
