Seven Polish miners missing after quake hits coal mine

WARSAW - Seven Polish coal miners were missing on Saturday after a quake hit a mine owned by JSW, the European Union's largest coking coal producer, officials said.

The quake took place in the Borynia-Zofiowka-Jastrzebie coal mine in southern Poland.

"According to latest information, seven employees are missing," the spokeswoman for the WUG mining office, Anna Swiniarska-Tadla, told state news agency PAP.

Fresh quakes hit Hawaii after Kilauea volcano erupts, hundreds flee

PAHOA, Hawaii - A series of fresh earthquakes on Friday, including a couple capable of causing considerable damage, hit Hawaii's Big Island, where the Kilauea volcano has been spewing fountains of lava into residential areas and forcing hundreds to evacuate.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the latest tremor at 12:32 p.m. (2332 GMT) measured a magnitude of 5.8.

"There are lava tubes on our property," said Dale Miller, 58, a Leilani Estates resident, referring to the natural tunnels underground that drain lava during an eruption. "The whole thing is Swiss cheese.

The last week of earthquakes around Kīlauea. Can see swarm migrating east to location of Thursday’s fissure eruption in Leilani Estates (yellow), then activity seems to shift west after big M6.9 yesterday evening (orange/red)?

I think it's because of the reddish color of the terrain there, which takes on a pink hue when it's spewed into the air.

Two of seven missing coal workers found alive in a Polish mine

Poland’s State Mining Authority said the tremor had a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre pegged it at 4.3 magnitude.

TVN24 said the tremor was also felt on the surface and shook some houses.

“There has never been such a powerful tremor at the mine,” she said.

Via @SismologiaCh : sea level monitoring station at Hilo indicates arrival of tsunami of about 0.25m in height (so not very high, but still significant). Also: the first waves of any tsunami are not necessarily the highest.
