Earthquake rocks Hawaii volcano; lava destroys dozens of homes, including mayor's

A magnitude-5.5 earthquake rattled Hawaii's Kilauea volcano Tuesday as the home of Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim was added to the inventory of destruction wrought by the searing lava ushering havoc into nearby Big Island communities.

Kim's home in the Vacationland neighborhood is one likely dozens of homes destoryed overnight, Hawaii County Civil Defense said Tuesday. The devastation will inflate the already confirmed 117 homes that have been destroyed since Kilauea began erupting May 3.

Lava is entering the water at the Vacationland tidepools and has inundated most of the subdivision, the Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported after a flyover Tuesday. To the north, lava covered all but the northern part of lots in Kapoho Beach, the observatory said.

Uh oh.

Hawaii appears to have stopped.

Assuming no more Hawaii quakes, I am expecting a 9.0+ to hit Japan around 6/11.

Ummmm...isn’t that weird? Similar six days if this holds true.

This was interesting:

It took place along the Antarctic Plate, but it also happens to be the antipode of the Hawaiian islands.

Close to the antipode. But not closer to the antipode than Mayotte.

oh okay, well thank you for the clarification Simple :) I see oh yes about, that's a useful map btw... oh woww had no idea that it was over Botswana area yes much closer to Mayotte.

I had a very rough idea, but my geography is slightly off target.
 Quoting: Sir Tim

I am highly impressed by you knowing the area of the antipode without that map!

Lol, I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise. tounge

Me too, I always have to check the antipode map! And often it's not at all where I expected, so clearly I am clueless.

So much interesting info & videos posted - it's hard to catch up! I so prefer the sweet spirit and friendship here - I seldom look at any other thread.

ND - so sorry to hear about your brother. Addiction is an ugly, tenacious beast. My heart aches for you! You and your family will be in my prayers.

Those vids from Guatemala broke my heart. So many people on foot trying to outrun the ash - with no chance of success. That cloud was moving so fast! A miracle to see the baby rescued.

I really love you guys - this is the one peaceful and loving escape I have right now - other than holding and loving on my great-granddaughter!! But my grandson & his fiance are having trouble and it may be boiling to a split. Because grandson is spoiled and not assuming the responsibility he should. It makes my heart hurt to think about losing my sweet Sadie! Please be praying for them.

Love you guys! Have a good rest of the night, and hope your Tuesday is great!

Dr. Lucy Jones

Magna with more quartz is stickier, can grow into tall cone, traps gases & more likely to explode: That's Guatemala. Low quartz magma, like Kilauea, create lava flows that travel out into a large, flatter shield volcano. Guatemala = hot deadly gas. Kilauea = extensive lava

Pyroclastic flows...

The volcano sits at an elevation of more than 12,000 feet and is one of three in the area near the city of Antigua. It’s a stratovolcano, meaning it’s built up over time to have steep slopes, especially near the cone. They’re some of the most common—and most deadly—volcanoes on Earth, and they emit a combination of lava and pyroclastic flows.

“In Fuego, the main devastation was due to the pyroclastic flows,” Mather told Newsweek. “This is very different to a lava flow.” Pyroclastic flows are a mixture of hot gas along with volcanic matter, like ash and rock fragments, she said. They are incredibly hot and can travel faster than a moving vehicle in some cases.

[link to www.newsweek.com]

A pyroclastic flow (also known as a pyroclastic density current or a pyroclastic cloud) is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter (collectively known as tephra) that moves away from a volcano reaching speeds of up to 700 km/h (430 mph). The gases can reach temperatures of about 1,000 °C (1,830 °F).
