Modern seismologists estimate the 1812 New Madrid earthquake at 7.5 to 8.0 magnitude, though some say it could have rated as much as 8.8. It's recognized as the strongest earthquake ever to strike east of the Mississippi River. But the Feb. 7 earthquake was just the climax of a series of major quakes and constant minor rumblings that had shaken the midwest since December 1811.

Today, the 652,000 residents of Memphis, Tennessee live in a city built atop that same soil, and the seismic zone deep beneath them remains restless.

The ground kept trembling, off and on, until Jan. 23, 1812, when another powerful quake stuck, this time with its epicenter in the Missouri bootheel, near the junction of the Ohio River and the Mississippi Rivers. Geologists say the Jan. 23 quake was probably a rupture on the New Madrid fault, which put more stress on the nearby Reelfoot Fault and set the stage for the strongest earthquake yet.
