Small town gutted overnight

The small town of Clifton Springs in East Gippsland, Victoria, has been devastated overnight with residents now returning to check on their homes.

As it currently stands, 43 homes have been destroyed however authorities fear this number could rise as assessment crews continue to survey the damage.

9News reporter Sam Cucchiara is in Clifton and told Today locals are heartbroken by the loss in their small community.


"Many of them broke down in tears. They could only bear to be here for a few minutes before getting back in the car and leaving these areas," he said.

The Clifton Creek Primary School has also been burnt to the ground.

"Not much has been left of this place. The art rooms, the two classrooms, the multi-purpose room and admin area have all been destroyed in this fierce blaze," said Cucchiara.

I'm doing the same here. I definitely prefer staying home on NYE now. Even my kiddo will be home tonight which makes me so happy, plus I won't have to worry about her. She might be buying her first car tonight! I may make her and her boyfriend a small cocktail to toast with at midnight.

When hubby took our daughter the first time she was looking a little deer in the headlight panicky (I can't go, the gun powder smells wonderful but triggers the damned asthma). When they got home, she was bragging about all shots hitting center mass, including her first shot. She also wants to become bow proficient.

Teaching our children how to protect themselves, feed themselves and to love others, is a job well done.

That is so freaking scary!

It always amazes me how smart dolphins are. That cutie knew exactly what he/she was doing, going to find that human. And then it just floated there while he got that hook and line off. Such an awesome animal.

Bow shooting would be really cool! I'd like to learn that myself.

Mini cracked me up. She was pretty nervous and kept saying that she didn't want to shoot the gun, but after a little bit of hands on training and learning how to use it, she was excited to try shooting and was so proud of herself with how well she did on her first try. As was I!

Still have the flu - though it is better. Daughter is doing some shopping and getting anniversary cards for me to give to my hubby since I can't go out. Did I ever post a pic of my beautiful 25th anniversary ring my hubby gave me last year?

We always stay home on NYE, too dangerous not to. We want to start the NY as a whole family, not one torn apart by death.

We make up a big platter of different cheeses, black and green olives, pepperoni, salami, Ritz and other types of crackers. On another tray is fresh veggies (yes we all over raw veggies) ranch dip, Tostitos queso dip, chips, and always for my son, a can of cheddar cheese to spray on his crackers.

Since there are just four of us, we make sure we have all of the above but in small amounts. When there are more of us, we double as needed. Have been doing this very same thing for 50 years, though when I was a kid, it was cheese balls that my mom made. I never had time for them when I was working so that tradition fell by the wayside.

Oh and sparkling cider!!

With some help, yes. We made a deal months ago that once she saved $1,000 that I would match her. My parents offered the same and her other grandmother did too. So she saves $1,000 and it turns into $4,000. She found a cute little Honda Accord that she is pursuing. Looks like it won't happen tonight though, but should be soon. : )

Then I can take her off of my insurance! Woo hoo lol!!

It was amazing and shows just how very smart dolphins are. Just knowing that a human could help him was awesome enough - it then showed the man where the boo boo was, then stayed as still as it could while he worked on him. Just crazy.
