Cold and snowy here, we got 8 inches last night with wind. Road warnings everywhere! Sister in Idaho said her house was swaying in the earthquake!

@USGSVolcanoes Hey. So um, ya probably know of the earthquake that hit in Idaho. I found out it was very close to the Challis Volcanic formation. What are the chances of the earthquake being magmatic, or a precursor to a future eruption?

Pretty small. It was a normal faulting event, which is related to tectonic extension of the western US. Such quakes are unfortunately pretty common in the region. Like the 1983 Borah Peak earthquake, M6.9, also in central Idaho. Volcanic quakes don't get this big.

A M6.5 earthquake just happened in Idaho this evening, northeast of Boise. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov (secure)] …
@USGS website is not showing aftershocks yet, but you should expect them. The largest aftershock to the average M6.5 is M5.3. Half have aftershocks even bigger than this

Idaho has a history of bigger quakes. In 1983, the Borah Peak quake was M7.0. Today's quake is almost 100 miles northwest of the 1983 event.
